(Jan. 20, 2017) – The Purchase College women's basketball team dropped a Skyline Conference game, 77-52, to SUNY Old Westbury over the weekend at the Clark Athletic Center.
Alfa DeJesus (SO/Bronx, NY) broke the scoring ice 46 seconds in with a layup to give Purchase (6-8, 4-6 SKY) the early 2-0 lead. Old Westbury (14-2, 8-2 SKY) misfired on its first-five attempts from the floor until Monique Joseph and Destiny Marino scored on back-to-back possessions to put Old Westbury ahead, 4-2.
After Purchase went up 6-4 with 6:43 left in the first quarter, Old Westbury answered with 14 unanswered points as five different scorers contributed during that stretch to go up 18-6. Old Westbury led by double digits for the final 32:31 as a layup from Davida Warren made it a 16-6 game. Marino later sank a trio of free throws to cap a 12-2 Old Westbury run to make it a 20-point game (39-19) with 1:09 remaining in the second quarter. Purchase scored the final three points of the half to head into intermission trailing 39-22.
Old Westbury scored 10-straight points out of the third-quarter gates to push its lead to 27 (49-22) with 6:19 remaining in the period. Playing with the lead for the final 35:17 of play, Old Westbury built its advantage to a game-high 29 points (57-28) off a Joseph layup with 3:33 left in the quarter. Purchase answered with a 17-2 run to pull within 14 points (59-45) with 9:36 left in the fourth quarter. Old Westbury went on a 12-0 scoring spree to go up 28 (77-49) while maintaining its 20-point lead for the final 4:54.
Charlotte Renker finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds (eight offensive) and three blocks to record her eighth double-double of the season (19th career). Joseph followed with 16 points, nine rebounds (five offensive) and a game-high six steals. Marino chipped in 13 points, five assists and three steals. Bridgid McNeill contributed 10 points and 9 rebounds (five offensive) while Warren scored 10 points, grabbed 10 boards and swatted away two blocks to register her fourth-career double-double off the bench.
Amber Jones (JR/Bronx, NY) paced Purchase with 22 points (8-of-16 FG) and three steals while
Kayla Ortiz (SR/Brooklyn, NY) added 14 points and three steals.
In the end, Old Westbury hit on 39 percent (32-of-82) from the floor, 7.7 percent (1-of-13) from beyond the arc and 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the charity stripe. By comparison, Purchase connected on 27.6 percent (16-of-58) from the floor, 10 percent (2-of-20) from 3-point range and 85.7 percent (18-of-21) from the free-throw line.
Old Westbury won the boards battle, 66-29, while scoring 21 second-chance points off 29 offensive rebounds. Old Westbury scored 22 points off 22 Purchase turnovers and held the edge in blocks (6-3), assists (20-6), steals (11-10), fastbreak points (22-6), points in the paint (58-22) and bench points (13-3).
Purchase is back on the road this Wednesday to take on Mount Saint Mary College at 7 p.m.
