Purchase, NY
(Jan. 25, 2018) – The Purchase College men's basketball team earned their second straight victory Thursday night, building off Monday night's monumental victory over No. 14 Wesleyan.
The Panthers showed no letdown against a formidable conference opponent in Mount Saint Mary tonight, posting a 67-59 win against the Knights.
In the process, Purchase is now 11-6 overall, including 7-5 in the Skyline Conference. The win snaps the Panthers' two-game slide in conference.
The loss also drops MSMC to 7-10, including 7-5 in league play.
The Knights started strong in a first half that was slow developing for both programs. MSMC held a 17-13 advantage, but Purchase battled back to within one, 21-20 moments later.
The visitors answered with a 3-pointer and eventually closed the half leading 28-26 – a low scoring affair for both high-powered teams.
Things opened up in the second half, especially for the hosts. Purchase would go on to outscore the Knights 41-31 to win the ballgame.
Eight players scored points for Purchase in a balanced attack for head coach
Kyle Martin's crew. The Panthers were paced offensively by swingman
Deshawn Cann (JR/Queens, NY). He recorded an impressive double-double effort, notching a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds.
Cann added five assists, one block and two steals over 40 minutes. The junior showcased his talents on both ends of the floor in leading Purchase to a key league win.
Cann, who lined the football pass to
Michael Soffer (JR/Agoura Hills, CA) in Monday's buzzer-beating victory, was followed by that game's hero in the stats column. Soffer continued his hot hand as well, scoring 14 points. Like Cann, he connected on three 3-pointers on the night.
Nikeem Deleon (SR/Bronx, NY) chipped in 11 points and
Tarik Allicock (SR/Brooklyn, NY) hauled in 13 rebounds to help secure the win.
MSMC was led by Tyler McDine and his 19 points.
Purchase pulled away midway through the second half, taking a 43-34 lead that it would not relinquish, despite a late push from the Knights. The visitors got within three (48-45) before Purchase pulled away for good. The Panthers took command down the stretch to seal it.
Purchase will look to make it three-in-a-row Saturday, when the Panthers welcome USMMA to the campus.
With Skyline Swim Championships on site, Purchase will be charging spectators $2 for entrance to the game. Students with campus ID are free, as are children under 12.
