Panthers Sweep on Senior Night

Purchase, NY (Oct. 24, 2018) – The Purchase College women's soccer team made quick work of visiting SUNY College at Old Westbury on Wednesday night as the Panthers celebrated Senior Night with a dominating 2-0 victory in Skyline Conference action.

The game also closed out the regular season for Purchase as the team finishes with an overall record of 4-10 (3-6 SKY). In defeat, Old Westbury drops to 4-13-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the league.

Freshman ace Rebecca Colgan (Valley Stream, NY) netted both goals for PC. After a scoreless first half, the rookie got the home team up on the board in the 71st minute off an assist from sophomore Madeline Mecca (Oceanside, NY). Colgan hit a high shot from the top of the 18-yard box that slipped by the hands of Old Westbury netminder Alexa Higgins.

A little over 10 minutes later, Colgan found the back of the net again—this time on a pass from junior midfielder Brett Robison (Franklin Square, NY). The two goals bring Colgan's season totals to eight goals and 18 points.

Picking up her third shutout in 2018, junior goalkeeper Amber Yarter (Albany, NY) collected three saves in the win.

Higgins tallied six saves for Old Westbury and was tagged with her 13th loss of the season.

Purchase held an 18-8 (8-3 on net) advantage in shots, including 14 in the second half. Old Westbury led 3-2 in corner kicks.

Prior to Wednesday's game, the Panthers honored their five seniors: Ana Jaco, Jessica Warren, Tori La Fata, Breann McKeon and Brittany Esposito.

Jaco (Glen Cove, NY) has been with the team for two years and is known to be one of the most hard-working members of the team. "She is a player who doesn't ever complain, and does exactly what was asked of her," added Panther head coach Breena Proctor. "She is always ready to play when she is called upon. Although quiet, Ana always leads by example. Her leadership qualities have helped her teammates become better people and players. The coaches are so happy you decided to play and watching you grow as a player has been notable."

For the last two seasons, Warren (Stony Point, NY) has continuously become a better player through her hard work and determination. "She put in the work this summer to develop her play but also her knowledge of the game," Proctor explained. "This off-season work had a clear impact on her ability and paid off big time this season."  Warren scored twice this season, one of which was a conference winner in the last second of the game against SUNY Maritime. "These moments have been remarkable to watch as coaches. She has come so far as a player and is someone who is always happy and building her teammates up. She has been a pleasure to coach and we can't wait to see what she can achieve after Purchase."

La Fata (East Meadow, NY) is a two-year captain and four-year player at PC. She shows true leadership abilities and her energy is evident every time she steps on the field. "She works hard but works even harder to build her teammates up," Proctor added. "She is constantly looking out for everyone on and off the field. She not only leads by example but leads with her voice. Tori has been a solid midfield player for this program and will be missed greatly next season."

"McKeon (Staten Island, NY) is a player who truly understands what it means to be on a team. Being a captain for the past two seasons, she leads her team by empowering them to do better every day. She is organized, a great communicator, advocator, and a player who continuously shows up to play. Breann has been a solid and constant player for us as part of our back line. She has improved greatly in her technical skill and it showed in her play this season. She has been a big piece in building this program and her contributions will continue to hold a mark on this program for years to come. Breann will be missed in the back line next year."

"Esposito (Flushing, NY) has become a staple in our back line, and it will be sorely missed. She is a fearless player who showed up to play every game. She is a player willing to play through anything for the success of the team. She has played through injury and sickness this past season without question. She shows true mental toughness every day. Brittany goes above and beyond in every aspect of the sport. She never backs down from a challenge on the field. She stepped up in a huge way this season, earning captain and taking over the back line.  The back line will not be the same without her. She truly earned her spot as a captain from beginning to end, and her leadership will be missed next season. We are very proud of the way she played this season and can't wait to see all that she can accomplish after Purchase."
