(Oct. 3, 2018) – After coming from behind to win the first set, the Purchase women's volleyball team couldn't slow down the Maritime attack in a 3-1 loss (26-24, 18-25, 13-25, 18-25) in their Skyline Conference opener on Wednesday night.
Purchase (2-7, 0-1 SKY) was down by as many as six points in the opening set, coming back to win 26-24. Standout rookie
Sommer Code (FR/Bronx, NY) led the Panthers in the set with three kills on seven attempts without a single error (.449). She added one service ace and five digs in the effort.
Grace Ann Gropp (FR/Webster, NY) hit .375 with five kills on eight attempts and only two errors.
The visiting Privateers (3-9, 1-1 SKY) rallied in the next three sets to secure the match victory and take home their first league win of 2018.
The Maritime attack was led by Abigail Steele and Celyna Custodi, who totaled 10 kills and three aces apiece. Meghan Eagleton led with 19 digs, while Erika Kirchner tallied a match-high 29 assists.
For the Panthers, Code fueled the offense with a game-best 13 kills. Gropp chipped in with eight kills and a team-high three blocks.
Skyla Schoppmeyer (FR/Oakdale, NY) led the PC defense with an impressive match-high 20 digs. The rookie libero also netted two service aces, while teammate
Gia Gwin (FR/Yonkers, NY) added a notable four aces, nine digs and four kills.
Purchase is back in action on Saturday to take on Skyline foe Farmingdale State in a tri-match hosted by the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
