New York, NY
(March 17, 2018) – New
head coach Mark Sergio earned his first victories as a Panther head coach Saturday at Randall's Island.
Although inclement weather moved the team's home opener to the alternate location, Sergio and the Panthers looked right at home, sweeping Baruch College 7-3 and 8-0, respectively. The second game was final in five innings.
Sergio, who has made a quick transition from top assistant to head coach, is now 2-0 with the official title.
Kelly Hayes (JR/Staten Island, NY) headlined the doubleheader sweep. The center fielder batted .857 over two games, collecting six hits in seven tries, while smashing two doubles, one triple and one home run. Hayes had 13 total bases on the afternoon, slugged 1.857 and played a near flawless twin bill, registering four putouts, one assist and no errors over two games.
Returning All-Skyline selection
Lisa Kentris (JR/Latham, NY) finished the day with a team-best five RBI from the leadoff spot. Second baseman
Victoria Capone-Froio (SR/Yonkers, NY) also had two doubles and batted .400, as did
Daniella Edelson (JR/Hopewell Junction, NY), who roped a shot down the line – another highlight on the day for the Panther offense, which outscored the Bearcats 15-3 over 12 innings on the diamond.

In addition to their offense, the Panthers got a huge lift in the circle. Rookie
Kelly Agostini (FR/Centereach, NY) hurled a game-one win, striking out five over seven innings. She also batted .600 over the two games, second best on the team. The freshman collected a victory in the circle and three hits in her debut.
Game-two starter
Kylia Maddox-Langley (JR/Mount Vernon, NY) made a triumphant return from a year hiatus. The pitcher threw a five-inning shutout, striking out three. Baruch batted .118 against the flame-throwing Maddox-Langley, sealing Sergio's twin bill.
Newcomers
Gabriella Carnevale (FR/Carteret, NJ) and
Shawna Smith (FR/Kingston, NY) also performed well in their first action.
Purchase returns to the diamond Thursday at Randall's Island – weather permitting. The Panthers will host Brooklyn College for a doubleheader.
