Purchase, NY
(Mar. 6, 2018) – Behind eight hits and a 16-run outburst, the Purchase baseball team picked up a 16-2 win over the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels on Tuesday.
With the win, Purchase now stands at 6-3 on the season. The 16 runs mark the most scored in a single game by the team this season.
Junior first baseman
Brian Cunningham (Westbury, NY) led the Panthers on the evening offensively, going 1-for-3 with four runs score and two RBI. Juniors
Nick Tuozzola (Milford, CT) and
Gregory Walsh (Bethpage, NY) each recorded a RBI-triple, while sophomore third baseman
Patrick Wallace (Manorville, NY) chipped in a 1-for-3 effort with two runs scored and three RBI. Freshman outfielder
Zack Dicanio (Mastic Beach, NY) finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
Panther sophomore
Nicholas Torres (Cornwall, NY) (1-0) went the distance on the mound, throwing five innings while giving up only two earned runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Torres picked up his first win of the season for the standout performance.
Junior
Matthew Villalobos (Brooklyn, NY) took over in the sixth, allowing two hits while striking out two of the eight batters he faced. Junior
Jake Scimone (Bayport, NY) and freshman
Michael Laskowski (Floral Park, NY) both pitched a perfect inning of no hit, no run ball. Scimone relieved Villalobos to start the bottom of the eighth inning and Laskowski closed the game, securing the Panther victory.
The Panthers struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Cunningham singled to left field, scoring
Dylan Flynn (FR/Smithtown, NY) and Walsh. Wallace followed with a sacrifice flyout to right field that brought Cunningham around to score.
The Blue Angels answered with a run in the top of the third before a Purchase five-run rally in the bottom half of the inning put the score at 8-1 in favor of the home team.
CNR would add another run in the fourth off a RBI-single from Albert Rodriguez, but the Blue Angel defense was no competition for the hot-hitting Panthers. Purchase went on to score a combined eight runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to lock in the 16-2 victory.
Purchase returns to its home diamond on Saturday (Mar. 10). The Panthers are set to host John Jay College for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
