(Apr. 11, 2018) – The Purchase College baseball team dropped a non-conference game to Western Connecticut State University, 9-1, on Wednesday afternoon.
In defeat, the Panthers fall to 14-12 overall while the Colonials advance to 9-10 on the season.
Purchase fired first with a run in the top of the first inning. Freshman second baseman
Matthew Mulligan (Bellport, NY) got on with a walk and later stole second and third. Sophomore third baseman and Skyline Player of the Week
Patrick Wallace (Manorville, NY) took ball four as junior center fielder
Matthew Villalobos (Brooklyn, NY) stepped up to the plate. A wild pitch would advance Wallace to second and push Mulligan across to score, 1-0. Villalobos flew out to right field to close the top half of the inning.
WestConn answered back with nine runs spread across the four innings and held the Panthers scoreless the rest of the way.
For Western, sophomore designated hitter Zach Piroh went 3-for-3 with three doubles and two runs batted in to lead the home team.
Piroh had three of the Colonials 16 hits on the afternoon. Three other WestConn starters registered three hits in the victory. Brett Shaw, Kyle MacLean and Matt Mancini each went 3-for-4 as the Panthers sent seven pitchers to the bump.
Mulligan was the only Panther with multiple hits as he went 2-for-4.
Kyle Cole earned the victory and is now 1-2 on the season. He came on in relief of starter Andrew Fogerty in the fifth inning.
Cole allowed just two hits while walking one over three innings.
Fogarty yielded the visitor's only run while giving up two hits. He struck out three and walked four.
Freshman righty Mike Hendler worked the final two innings and allowed three singles.
Dominic Micara (JR/Massapequa, NY) suffered the loss and is now 0-4 on the season. He allowed three runs on two hits while striking out one and walking three in an inning of work.
The Panthers return to the Purchase diamond this Saturday for Skyline doubleheader against the College of Mount Saint Vincent. First pitch of the opening game is slated for 11 a.m.
