Old Westbury, NY
(April 22, 2018) – Purchase softball dropped two games at Mount Saint Mary Saturday and earned a split at Old Westbury Sunday, playing back-to-back Skyline Conference doubleheaders on the weekend.
Old Westbury won 6-3 in game one, but the Panthers rebounded in an 8-6 game-two win. MSMC won 9-1 and 10-1, respectively, Saturday.
In the opener Sunday, Purchase broke the scoring ice with a
Kelly Hayes (JR/Staten Island, NY) RBI double on Old Westbury starter Lauren Bloom for the 1-0 lead.
Amanda Fucci tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a RBI single that scored Bloom.
In the second inning, Bloom keyed a three-run frame with a two-run double that scored Jessica Livingston for the game-winning run.
Old Westbury extended its lead to five in the fourth.
Purchase scored two runs in the fifth on a
Daniella Edelson (JR/Hopewell Junction, NY) two-run double that settled the 6-3 final.
In game two, Old Westbury jumped out to a 1-0 first-inning lead as a fielding error.
Another fielding error allowed Bloom to score and Amanda Neenan's single drove in Samantha Arcese to make it a 3-0 game in the third inning.
Purchase erupted for seven runs on three hits and five errors on Baron in a decisive seventh inning.
Shawna Smith (FR/Kingston, NY) played hero. Her two-out single to second scored
Antonina Fiore (SR/Mount Sinai, NY) for the game-winning run as Purchase went up 7-3.
Old Westbury's comeback attempt fell short after scoring three runs in the seventh inning.
Saturday, the Knights got all the scoring they would need in the first inning, plating three runs on two hits. Cindy Connoly got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly and Taylor Canto delivered two runs with a two-out single in the inning.
Mount Saint Mary put the game away with five more runs in the second to build an 8-0 lead. The Mount produced four hits in the inning, including a pair of run-scoring singles.
Purchase plated its only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning, but the Mount quickly responded in the bottom half of the frame to end the contest early. Mount Saint Mary found itself trailing by a run after the visitors plated a run in the first inning, but answered with two runs in the second, three in the third and five in the home half of the fifth inning.
Mount Saint Mary picked up its second five-run win on Saturday with five tallies in the fifth.
Connoly picked up her second win of the day in game two and moved to 9-7 on the season. She allowed one unearned run on two hits and struck out six in her 11th complete game.
