Purchase, NY
(Apr. 7, 2018) – The Purchase baseball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader with league foe Farmingdale State on Saturday afternoon for its first win against the Rams since 2014.
The Panthers (12-11, 4-4 SKY) took the first game by a score of 4-3 before dropping game two, 7-2, to the visiting Rams (12-7, 4-2 SKY).
Game 1: Purchase 4, Farmingdale 3
Purchase rookie
Dylan Flynn (FR/Smithtown, NY) opened up scoring action with a RBI double to left field in the bottom of the third inning. He later came around to score on a
Brian Cunningham (JR/Westbury, NY) RBI single to third base, advancing the home
team's lead to 2-0.
The Rams evened the score with two runs in the top of the sixth. Devin Caybasi came around on an Anthony Gigante ground out to shortstop and Vincent Rice homered later in the inning to tie the game.
Purchase third baseman
Patrick Wallace (SO/Manorville, NY) broke the stalemate with a 2-RBI single that pushed Cunningham and Flynn across in the eighth.
Farmingdale added a run to open the ninth but the rally was short-lived as back-to-back ground outs to third base ended the inning and secured the Panther win.
Senior ace
Jonathon Deacon (Lindenhurst, NY) (5-0) pitched a complete game on the mound, giving up two runs on seven hits. He recorded four strikeouts over nine innings to lead Purchase to victory in the twin bill opener.
Farmingdale pitcher Joe Marino (2-2) was tagged with the loss.
Game 2: Farmingdale 7, Purchase 2
Farmingdale's bats came alive in the second game, as the Rams put up six unanswered runs through 5.5 innings. Domenic Palumbo led the Ram offense with homeruns in the second and fourth innings, respectively.
Purchase scored its first run in the bottom half of the sixth. Flynn tripled to start off the inning and came around to score on a Cunningham RBI single through the left side. The Panthers scored again in the seventh but Rams' 7-2 lead was too far out of reach.
Farmingdale's starting pitcher, Matthew Constantine, tallied his second win of the season after holding the opposing lineup scoreless for five straight innings. Constantine gave up just two runs on five hits while striking out three batters over 6.1 innings of action.
The Panthers take to the road tomorrow for a Skyline doubleheader at St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn). First pitch is set for noon.
