Women's Volleyball Back in Win Column on Senior Night

Panthers Sweep Five Towns, 3-0

PURCHASE, NY – The Purchase women's volleyball team got back in the win column with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-16) sweep over Five Towns College on Wednesday night. Prior to the non-conference victory, the Panthers honored senior co-captains Isis Gonzalez (Brooklyn, NY) and Joetta Francis (New York, NY) along with senior team manager Andreo Otiniano with a Senior Night ceremony.

Purchase (5-16) dominated the match from the start, hitting a combined .244 as a team in the opening set. The Panthers recorded a collective 15 kills, led by Francis' eight-kill performance. The veteran middle blocker committed just two errors in the stanza for an impressive .333 hitting percentage.

Five Towns (3-13) broke the scoring ice for the second set but PC rallied with four unanswered points to take a 4-1 lead. The PC offense continued to ignite, firing in 13 kills (.409) and four service aces. The Panther defense also contributed to the 25-13 win after posting 15 digs in the set.

Purchase completed the sweep of the visiting Sound with a 25-16 final set victory. Outside hitters Gia Gwin (SO/Yonkers, NY) and Pamella Gonzalez (FR/Bronx, NY) combined for four kills and 10 digs, Briana Thompson (FR/Bronx, NY), Kyanni King (FRBronx, NY) and Francis were also on point, leading the Panther defense with four combined blocks.

The Panthers finished the match with 36 total kills on 89 attempts with 12 errors (.270), while holding the visitors to just .073 attack percentage. Francis, Gwin and Skyla Schoppmeyer (SO/Oakdale, NY) led the attack with eight kills apiece. Schoppmeyer tossed a notable 20 assists, while Isis Gonzalez paced the defense with 13 digs.

For Five Towns, Lanasia Drain led with 11 kills (.188) and two solo blocks. Emily Angelastro and Anna Matytsina aided the defensive effort with a combined 25 digs, while Jada Roberts-Duncan produced 13 assists.

Purchase returns to Skyline Conference action next Tuesday (Oct. 29).  The Panthers are set to host league foe St. Joseph's College (L.I.), starting at 7 p.m.
