NEWBURGH, NY – The Purchase College women's basketball team snapped its two-game winning streak on the road Saturday afternoon, falling to Skyline Conference powerhouse Mount Saint Mary College, 79-34.
The host Knights (6-1, 5-0 SKY) opened the game with a 16-0 run, led by a combined 14-point effort from Morina Bojka and Lyndsay Pace.
Following an offensive rebound by junior guard DeJeana Peoples (New York, NY), sophomore forward
Shadai Plowden (Yonkers, NY) connected from inside the paint to open the scoring for Purchase (2-6, 1-2 SKY). Junior center
Amani Graham (Brooklyn, NY) added a layup to narrow the MSMC lead to 17-4 but the Knights answered back with a pair of three-pointers and went on to close the first quarter with a 21-point advantage (27-6).
The Knights kept their momentum going in the second quarter, scoring eight unanswered points in the opening minutes. MSMC grew its lead to 41-11 on a three-point bucket from Katelyn McCann with 3:52 remaining in the stanza.
Purchase held the Knights scoreless for the final three minutes, while Plowden put in work for the Panther offense with back-to-back shots.
At the half, Mount Saint Mary led 41-15.
The Knights shot 43.2 percent in the first half and knocked down seven three-pointers. Purchase shot 20.0 percent and connected on just one of its seven three-point attempts.
Mount Saint Mary opened the third quarter with a 14-4 run before sophomore guard
Amber Rodriguez (Queens, NY) and Plowden poured in back-to-back buckets for Purchase. MSMC then concluded the quarter on an 8-2 run with a lay-in from Kylie Sisto and a three from Julia Lavin.
The hosts did not let up over the final 10 minutes and secured the Skyline win with a 16-9 run.
Mount Saint Mary shot 51.7 percent in the second half and made four triples while the Panthers were held to 27.3 percent and made just one three-point field goal
The Knights were led by Annie Keenan and Bojka with 14 points apiece.
Plowden led all scorers with 15 points. The 5-9 forward pulled down seven rebounds for Purchase, while senior tri-captain raked in a game-best eight boards.
The Panthers will resume action, following the winter break, at home against St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) on Jan. 4. The 2020 Skyline matchup will tipoff at 12 p.m.
