(Feb. 2, 2019) – Purchase men's basketball came out on the losing end of double overtime loss at SUNY Old Westbury, 90-87, over the weekend.
In a first half that featured seven lead changes, Old Westbury put together a 14-2 run ignited by Chase Johnson's three to go up 19-12 with 12:25 left in the opening period. Trailing 30-26, Johnson landed three of his 15 first-half points at the 5:12 mark to spark a 10-0 spurt before junior guard
Maxx Miller (White Plains, NY) drove in a layup with 32 seconds left to trim Purchase's deficit to four (36-32) at the break.
Old Westbury constructed a game-high eight-point lead (42-34) as Justin Alleyne-Washington sank a pair of free throws with 17:27 showing on the second-half clock. With just three lead changes in the stanza, Miller's three-point play with 1:41 left put Purchase ahead by four (71-67). OW's Alan McDonald started the comeback 18 seconds later with a three-point play of his own and tied the game at 71 by knocking down the backend free throw on his trip to the line with nine seconds remaining.
Headed to overtime, Purchase raced out to a 78-71 lead just 2:51 in. Old Westbury countered with a 9-2 scoring spree over the final 1:51 as Pedro Marquez's fastbreak layup with 29 seconds left sent the game into a second overtime tied at 80.

Elijah Lott (JR/East Greenbush, NY) gave Purchase a brief 82-80 lead, Alleyne-Washington scored six-straight points to put Old Westbury up by four (86-82) with 1:44 remaining. McDonald, who scored 11-overtime points, sealed the game with four makes from the free-throw line to push Old Westbury to victory. Purchase was unable to convert on a Lott attempt from three in the closing seconds as Old Westbury improved its home record to 7-3 on the season.
McDonald led all scorers with career highs of 30 points (9-of-10 FT) and 17 rebounds to post his eighth-career double-double. Johnson followed with a career-best 21 points (7-of-15 FG, 6-of-9 3PG). Marquez chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds while Alleyne-Washington scored six of his 14 points in the second overtime to go along with 10 rebounds and six assists to register his ninth-career double-double.
Lott finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds to pace Purchase, pushing his double-double season record to seven. Senior guard
Willie Britton (Yonkers, NY) contributed 19 points (7-of-11 FG) before fouling out with 2:30 left in the first overtime. Senior captain
Michael Soffer (Agoura Hills, CA) added 15 points (4-of-9 3FG) and five assists while Miller poured in 13 points (5-of-10 FG).
In the end, Old Westbury shot 36.4 percent (32-of-88) from the field, 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from three-point territory and 81.8 percent (18-of-22) from the free-throw line. Purchase connected on 42.5 percent (31-of-73) from the floor, 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from beyond the arc and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the charity stripe. Old Westbury won the boards battle, 56-47, scoring 16 points off 24 offensive rebounds. Purchase led the way in assists (19-14), blocks (3-0), steals (6-4), bench points (13-4) and scoring 19 points off 16 Old Westbury turnovers. Old Westbury held the edge in fastbreak points (22-10) and points in the paint (42-32).
Purchase is back on the road again this Wednesday (Feb. 6) to take on the Privateers of SUNY Maritime at 7 p.m.
