JAMAICA, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's volleyball team continued its winning ways Tuesday evening, as the Panthers earned a victory over York College, 3-0, in a non-conference road match.
Set scores for the sweep were 25-13, 25-23 and 25-14. The win was the fourth straight for Purchase, as the team enters the Skyline portion of its schedule.Â
After cruising in the opening set, Purchase (6-12) faced a tougher test in set two, as the Cardinals of York (2-17) upped their game. In fact, the Panthers trailed nearly the entire set.
It wasn't until the frame was tied at 19-19 that Purchase was able to snatch its first lead on an attack error by York. After a kill by freshman
Joe Higgins (College Point, NY) pushed the lead to 21-19 in favor of the guests, York called a timeout to regroup.
The break worked, as the hosts scored three straight out of the stoppage to jump back in front, 22-21. However, Purchase responded with three-straight points of its own, thanks to a York service and attack error and an ace from
Andreo Otiniano (JR/Mamaroneck, NY). With the set on the brink at 24-22, Purchase committed an error to give York a chance to tie things up, but an attack error from the Cardinals ended the frame, as the Panthers emerged, 25-23.
In set three, the guests regained their set one form, jumping out to a huge lead and eventually cruising to the set and match win.
On the night, Purchase hit .171 overall, but still finished with 26 kills, 15 aces and five blocks. Meanwhile, York struggled to find a hitting stroke, as the hosts hit .000 overall, with just 20 kills and one ace.Â
Freshman
Jeremiah Huntt (Bronx, NY) powered the Panthers with seven kills and seven aces, while Otiniano added 18 assists and three aces in the win. For York, Akil Vaughn (SO/Georgetown, Guyana) finished with a game-high 10 kills.Â
Up next for Purchase is a Skyline tri-match, as the Panthers host St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn and the College of Mount Saint Vincent on March 23rd. Those games will serve as Senior Day for
Luke Kubisch (SR/Delmar, NY) and are set to begin at 10 a.m. You can follow the event right here.Â
