Panthers Torch Brooklyn College in Doubleheader Sweep

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College softball team cruised to a pair of non-conference wins Sunday afternoon, as the Panthers swept Brooklyn College in a doubleheader.

Purchase won game one, 15-3, and game two, 10-0. With the wins, the hosts improved to 3-3 overall, while the Bulldogs of Brooklyn dropped to 1-5.

It didn't take the Panthers long to find their groove on the day. In the bottom of the first, the hosts poured in four runs off a bases-loaded walk from Shawna Smith (SO/Kingston, NY), an RBI single from Emily Nugent (FR/Bronx, NY), a passed ball and a Iyania Martin (SO/Queens Bridge, NY) groundout that scored Smith.

A couple innings later, the Bulldogs scored one run, but the Panthers quickly responded back. In the bottom half of the third, Nugent again smacked an RBI single, this time scoring two runs, as Purchase pushed its lead to 6-1.

In the fourth inning, the Panthers exploded for nine runs, with every score coming with two outs in the frame. A two-RBI single from pitcher Kelly Agostini (SO/Centereach, NY) got the fireworks started, before a Brooklyn error allowed two more runs in. Danielle Morelli (FR/Riverdale, NY) knocked in a run on a single up the middle. Another Brooklyn error allowed two more runs in, before a two-RBI double from Mae Testa Feliciano capped the inning.

Brooklyn added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 15-3, but couldn't close the gap enough to push the opening game further.

On the mound, Agostini tossed a two-hit complete game. She finished with five strikeouts, five walks and three runs allowed. For Brooklyn, Megan Ortiz-Mengedoht (FR/Brooklyn, NY) collected the loss.

Feliciano, Agostini, Smith and Nugent each finished with two hits apiece in the game one win. Nugent tallied three RBIs, while Agostini and Smith each scored three runs.

Purchase's dominating win carried into the second game of the day, the Panthers won that contest, 10-0.

After a Brooklyn error allowed a run to score in the first inning of game two, Cassidy Montes (SO/Yonkers, NY) slapped an RBI single in the second to make it 2-0. In the third frame, smart base running scored another run, as Kaitlyn Antonelli (SO/Yonkers, NY) tagged up and scored after Brooklyn celebrated a wild catch near the dugout. Later in that inning, Feliciano hit an RBI double, making it 4-0.

In the fourth, the Panthers knocked in six runs, as an RBI single from Smith got the scoring started. A two-RBI triple from Feliciano expanded the lead, while a Morelli RBI single and a two-RBI single from Victoria Capone-Froio (SR/Yonkers, NY) blew the game wide open.

Montes finished off the win with a quick effort in the top of the fifth, as the Panthers mercy ruled Brooklyn for the second-straight contest. Montes finished the game with nine strikeouts and just two hits allowed. Meanwhile, Anna Curran (JR/New York, NY) received the loss for the Bulldogs.

Montes and Feliciano each tallied two hits in the win, while Smith and Kiara Almonte (FR/Manhattan, NY) each scored two runs apiece.

Up next for the Panthers is midweek road doubleheader, as they travel to Hunter College on March 27th. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and you can follow that here.
