Second-Half Surge Propels Purchase to Win Over SUNY Cobleskill

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's lacrosse team used a dominant second half to roll to a 12-5 win over SUNY Cobleskill Saturday, in a non-conference game.

With the win, the Panthers improved to 5-2, while the Fighting Tigers of Cobleskill dropped to 2-4 overall.

To begin, it was the guests who jumped in front with two goals within the first seven minutes. Purchase remained close though, thanks to an unassisted goal from Ben Erkan (SO, Bellport, NY) just under eight minutes played in the first quarter.

After a third Cobleskill goal, Dan Ohrem (JR/Ridgefield, CT) notched his first goal of the day on a feed from Erkan. A minute later, the Fighting Tigers found the back of the net once more, as the quarter ended, 4-2, in favor of the guests.

From there however, the Panthers began to take over, both offensively and defensively. Ohrem converted a strike off an assist from Dylan Gethicker (SR/Lime Lake, NY) early in the second, before Gethicker tied the contest at 4-4 on an individual effort midway through the quarter. During the frame, the Panther defense didn't allow a goal, as the teams entered halftime tied.

Purchase's momentum carried into the second half, as the Panthers outscored the Fighting Tigers, 3-0, in the third quarter. An unassisted goal from Ohrem got things started, before he added a man-up goal moments later. Finally, a last-second strike by Gethicker capped off the frame, handing the hosts a 7-4 lead entering the final 15 minutes.

SUNY Cobleskill remained in the contest though, as an early man-up goal cut the lead to 7-5 with 11:21 left. But that was as close as the guests got the rest of the day. The Panthers put the game away by scoring the final five goals, as they romped to a 12-5 win in the end.

Purchase enjoyed an advantage on shots, ground balls, turnovers and clears in the victory, while face offs between the two squads were identical at 10 each.

Individually, Ohrem continued his stellar opening season with the Panthers, as he collected a game-high six goals. Gethicker also had six points, as he finished with three goals and three assists.

Erkan totaled three goals and two assists in the win, while Joseph Ely (FR/North Salem, NY) went 10-for-19 on face offs, collected 12 ground balls and caused four turnovers. Matt Sayegh (JR/Hopewell Junction, NY) tallied 11 saves for the Panthers.

For the Fighting Tigers, Willie Wilson (SR/Geneva, NY) finished with nine saves and the loss. Five different players scored a goal for Cobleskill in the effort.

Up next for Purchase, is the start of Skyline Conference play, as the team travels to Maritime College on April 2nd. That game is set to begin at 1 p.m. and you can follow it here.
