Purchase, NY – No. 2 Purchase College men's volleyball made program history as they hosted the Skyline Semifinal match for the first time, earning a hard fought 3-2 victory over No. 3 St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn). The Panthers will now advance to the Conference Championship— another first for the program.
SJC pulled the first set victory over Purchase with a close score of 25-22, but the Panthers came back to win set two 25-23. The back-and-forth battle ended on a kill by
Andreo Otiniano (JR/Mamaroneck, NY) off the assist of
Joey Dyckman (FR/Verplanck, NY).
Brooklyn got ahead early in set three as they earned a five point advantage. Purchase continued to fight, then a kill by
Luke Kubisch (SR/Delmar, NY) from Otiniano tied the set at 9-9. The Panthers continued to ignite with five unanswered points, lead by two service aces by
Erick Zajack (FR/Staten Island, NY) which pushed the lead to 15-12.
The fans were on the edges of their seats as both teams were faced at a 24 point tie. A kill from
Jeremiah Huntt (FR/Bronx, NY) put Purchase ahead, but a following service error tied the game again at 25. Kubish then made an attacking error, but redeemed himself in the next play with a kill that tied the game at 26. Two kills from Brooklyn's Stephen Eddy and Dejon St.Rose-Cuffy ended the hard fought third set in favor of the visitors, 28-26.
A kill from Otiniano opened the fourth set, and back to back attacking errors by the visiting Bears pushed PC's lead to 4-1. Purchase stretched its lead to 10-3 on a service ace from Huntt, but SJC answered back with an 18-11 run to tie the game at 21 points. The Panthers would later close the set with four unanswered points, thanks to back to back blocking assists by Hunnt and
Thomas Slomka (JR/Orchard Park, NY) to record the 25-21 win.
The fifth and final set saw six lead changes, ending in favor of Purchase with a score of 15-11.
Joe Higgins lead the mark with two kills in four attempts, while Kubisch recorded three blocks en route to the Panther victory.
Purchase was lead by Huntt with 16 kills and six blocks, while Kubisch recorded 13 kills, 11 digs and five blocks.
Joe Higgins (FR/College Point, NY) netted 12 kills, and Otiniano shared the game high 44 assists. Dyckman lead the defense effort with 14 digs.
The Panthers will head to No. 1 Saint Joseph's (L.I.) on Saturday for the Skyline Championship match.
