MADISON, N.J. - The Purchase College softball team was defeated in a pair of contests at Drew University Wednesday, falling 4-2 and 10-2 in the non-conference matchups.
With the losses, the Panthers are now 7-19 overall, while the Rangers of Drew improved to 12-22.
In game one, the visitors struck first, as senior
Victoria Capone-Froio (Yonkers, NY) lead off the game with a triple. During the next at-bat, sophomore
Cassidy Montes drove her home on an RBI single to right field, as the Panthers grabbed an early lead. Later in the inning, Montes scored on a wild pitch, to make it a 2-0 game.
In the bottom half of the frame, the Rangers got a run back off an RBI double from Adriana Rodriguez (SO/Turnersville, NJ). The score remained 2-1 over the next three innings, until the the hosts tied the contest thanks to an RBI double from Jasmine Vera (SO/Dumont, NJ) in the fourth.
The Panthers nearly regained the lead in the fifth, as they got runners to second and third with just one out. However, with the pitching of Skyler Colarusso (FR/Williamsport, PA) carrying the Rangers, Purchase was held off the board in the inning and the rest of the game.
After a scoreless fifth from both squads, Drew was finally able to pull ahead in the sixth with a pair of runs scored off a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly. With one last chance remaining in the seventh for the Purchase offense, Colarusso thwarted the effort to complete the opening game win for Drew.
On the day, Colarusso allowed just two runs on four hits in the 7-inning complete game effort. For Purchase, Montes finished with two hits and received the loss on the mound.
Capone-Froio provided the other two hits for the Panthers.
In game two, the Rangers continued to roll, driving in three runs in the second inning. Purchase fought back with two runs in the third, as Capone-Froio stole home for the first score, while an RBI double from Montes during the next at-bat cut the deficit to 3-2.
Unfortunately from there, Drew's pitching stymied the Purchase bats once again, limiting the guests to just one hit the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the Ranger bats were just getting started. The hosts exploded for five runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to secure the win, 10-2.
Cara O'Leary (SR/Staten Island, NY) earned the win following her performance. She allowed just the two runs on three hits and struckout three.Â
For the Panthers,
Kelly Agostini (SO/Centereach, NY) was tagged with the loss. Capone-Froio, Montes and
Kiara Almonte (FR/Manhattan, NY) each finished with a hit in the effort.
Up next for Purchase is a return to Skyline Conference action, as the team will host Old Westbury on April 23rd for a doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 3 p.m. and you can follow it here.Â
