PURCHASE, NY – The Purchase College baseball team dropped a non-conference game at neighboring Manhattanville College Wednesday afternoon.
Freshman Alby Ciuffetelli tossed six shutout innings and senior Luke Scoggins surpassed 200 career hits in the 16-0 decision for the host Valiants.
Scoggins became just the fourth player in program history, and first since 2010, to reach the 200-hit mark.
Ciuffetelli struck out six and allowed just three hits for Manhattanville (21-14), lowering his ERA nearly three-quarters of a run. Scoggins finished 3-for-3 with three RBI's and two runs before being pulled for a pinch-runner in the fourth inning. In all the Valiants finished with 20 hits, with 15 players recording at least one.
Sitting on 198 career hits prior to the game, Scoggins reached 199 with a RBI double in the first, scoring Lynch, who led off the inning with a walk. Junior Peter Iannarilli followed with a RBI single scoring Viscusi, who had reached on an infield single. Silvestri plated Scoggins with a sacrifice fly, giving the Valiants a 3-0 lead after the first.
With one out and one on in the third, Scoggins reached the milestone mark with a single to right field. A bases-loaded walk to Joseph Silvestri and sacrifice fly by freshman Zachary Feinstein gave Manhattanville a 5-0 lead after the inning. Scoggins' milestone day ended in the fourth following a two-run single put the Valiants up 7-0.
In the fifth, Feinstein and sophomore Luke Shaffer started the inning with singles. After a fly out and a passed ball moved the runners to second and third, John Cirillo – who came on as a pinch-runner – scored when classmate Matt Lynch reached on a throwing error. Matero followed with a double to center field, scoring freshman pinch-runner Anthony Quatrochi.
After a pitching change by Purchase (15-16), Viscusi greeted the reliever with a two-run single to center, taking second on the throw home. After freshman Johnny Mariano reached on an infield single, Silvestri doubled to right field scoring two more. Cirillo followed with an RBI single to center, scoring Silvestri. In all, the Valiants scored seven runs on eight hits in the inning.
The score held until the bottom of the eighth. Jaile led off the inning with an infield single, much to the delight of the Manhattanville dugout. After a double by sophomore Matthew Careccia sent Jaile to third, sophomore Matt Tuite plated Jaile with a groundout. After a strikeout, senior Matt Coleman scored Careccia with a double to right field.
Freshman Nick Carita tossed the final two innings as Manhattanville closed out its second 16-0 win of the season.
