PURCHASE, NY – Seniors
Samantha Robinson,
Danielle Sarubbi and
Alex Youre-Moses were celebrated prior to the start of Purchase College's women's lacrosse game against the undefeated U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Friday afternoon.
The visiting Mariners would come away with the victory, capping 2019 action for the host Panthers as Purchase concludes the season in defeat, 22-3.
Surrounded by teammates, family and friends, the trio of seniors were individually recognized for their accomplishments both on and off the field.
Robinson (Yonkers, NY) made incredible strides in just her first season of lacrosse, starting in eight of nine games this season for the Panthers. "She always shows up ready to work and willing to learn," said head coach
Francesca Levine. "And we wish she could come back next year!"
Sarubbi (Brooklyn, NY) has been with the program since her freshman year and has grown so much as a player over the past four seasons. She battled through injury during her sophomore campaign to come back as one of the team's top starting attackers. "She is a true student of the game and always willing to help out her teammates," added Levine. "She will be sorely missed."
The third senior recognized was
Alex Youre-Moses. A standout at both defense and midfield, Youre-Moses joined the team as a freshman having never played lacrosse before. They learned the game and developed their skills very quickly. They have improved their skills a tremendous amount since their rookie campaign, to now play an integral role for the team this season. "Even with their demanding academic schedule, they made this team a priority and we are forever grateful for that," added Levine.
After Friday's loss, Youre-Moses concludes a three-year career with a total of 21 starts, 32 appearances, 23 ground balls, 12 cause turnovers and four goals.
USMMA broke open the scoring with back-to-back goals in the first minute of action. The Mariners fired in six more before Purchase lit up its side of the board on a goal by sophomore midfielder
Maddy Mecca (Oceanside, NY). USMMA answered back with a 10-1 run to close the first half with an 18-2 advantage.
The Mariners tacked on four more after the break before Purchase sophomore midfielder
Gabriella Castles (Bethpage, NY) capped the scoring in the game with a goal at 6:16.
For the visitors, Grace McHugh and Jessie Wohner combined for 10 points with five goals apiece. Jessica Reilly netted three goals and just as many assists, while Meredith Willard capped the multiple-goal performers with two goals off three shots.
USMMA will continue its 2019 campaign at Skyline semifinals next week. The top-seeded Mariners will host the league's No. 4 seed on Wednesday (May 1).
