PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College softball team erupted for 14 runs on 29 hits Monday afternoon, as the team ended the 2019 campaign with a pair of wins over Skyline Conference foe, the College at Old Westbury.
The Panthers took game one by the score of 8-4 and game two, 6-3.
After two scoreless innings started the day, Purchase broke that streak with a pair of runs in the third.
Cassidy Montes (SO/Yonkers, NY) doubled in
Victoria Capone-Froio (SR/Yonkers, NY) for the opening run, only for
Kelly Hayes (SR/Staten Island, NY) to knock in Montes during the next at-bat on a single.
The lead was short lived though, as Old Westbury snatched the advantage with three runs in the fourth. But just as quickly as the hosts fell behind, they responded back.
After
Kaitlyn Antonelli (SO/Yonkers, NY) led off the bottom of the frame with a walk, she advanced to second on a fielder's choice from
Gabriella Carnevale (SO/Carteret, NJ) and then third base on the ensuing throwing error.
During the next at-bat, Carnevale stole second to get two runners in scoring position for
Danielle Morelli (FR/Riverdale, NY). Morelli delivered with a two-run single right up the middle to flip the lead back to Purchase, 4-3.
Mae Testa Feliciano (FR/Brooklyn, NY) followed with an RBI double that scored Morelli, as the Panthers cruised from there. The hosts added two more runs in the inning to lead 7-3.
In the sixth, the guests got one run back, but an RBI single from
Daniella Edelson (SR/Hopewell Junction, NY) canceled that out to make it a four-run lead once more at 8-4, where the game finished.
On the mound, Montes tossed a gem for Purchase. She went all seven innings and allowed just four hits, four runs (two earned) and fanned four.
As for the Panther bats, the team had six different players each tally two hits apiece and 14 total in the win.
The Panthers' hot-hitting carried into game two, as Purchase topped Old Westbury, 6-3.
Despite earning the win in the end, it was actually the visiting Panthers that struck first in the second contest, as Old Westbury scored one run in the second and one in the third to start the game.
Meanwhile, the hosting Panthers were held scoreless through the first four innings, despite five hits over that span. That all changed in the fifth frame however, as the team scored three runs to jump in front and never looked back.
Montes, just like in game one, knocked in Capone-Froio on a single for the first Panther run, before Hayes smacked a triple during the next at-bat, easily scoring Montes. As Hayes was rounding the bases, the right fielder made a bad throw to third base, allowing Hayes to slip past for the third run of the frame.
One inning later, Purchase added three more runs to go up 6-2, before holding out to end the season on a 6-3 win.
Kelly Agostini (SO/Centereach, NY) earned the win for the Panthers, as she went seven innings and allowed just three runs on eight hits. She also finished with five strikeouts and three hits at-bat. Agostini wasn't the only Purchase player to find success at the plate in the win, as the team tallied 15 hits in the effort.
Capone-Froio finished with four hits, while Hayes and Edelson each collected two hits apiece, as the trio wrapped up their collegiate careers.
With the wins, Purchase finished the season 11-21 overall and 6-10 in the Skyline. The 11 wins are the most in a season for the team since 2016.
