NEW YORK, NY - The Purchase College men's volleyball was beaten by Hunter College Wednesday evening, as the Panthers lost in straight sets to the non-conference foe.
Set scores for the matchup were 25-7, 25-16 and 25-21. With the result, Purchase dropped to 0-4, while Hunter stayed undefeated at 3-0.
To begin the night, the Hawks dominated. They finished the opening set with a .643 hitting percentage, nine kills, eight aces and two blocks in the frame.
However, after the first set, the two sides played a much tighter contest.
Early in the second stanza, the two sides were tied at 8-8, before Hunter scored seven of the next eight points run flipped the momentum to the hosts at 15-9. Purchase did manage to close the gap later in the set at 17-13 with an ace, but that was as close as the guests got the rest of the frame.Â
Once again, Hunter dominated hitting in the middle frame, finishing with a .364 hitting percentage to Purchase's .000 mark.Â
Despite that though, it was actually the Panthers who started off the third set hot by jumping out to an early advantage, 8-3. Purchase continued to maintain the lead for a bit longer, before the Hawks slowly but surely clawed their way back into the fight.
With the score of 15-13 in favor of the guests, the Hawks put together a 6-1 scoring run that changed the script and put them back in front. Purchase tried its best to fight back over the rest of the set, but eventually just ran out of time, falling by the score of 25-21.
Over the entire match, the hosts recorded a .319 hitting percentage, 38 kills and 11 aces. Meanwhile, Purchase's hitting improved in each set to finish the night with a .036 mark with 14 kills.
Christian Colon (JR/Bronx, NY) led the Panthers with three kills, two aces and two blocks in the effort.
Jeremiah Huntt (SO/Bronx, NY) added five kills, while
Idris Idris recorded seven assists and three digs.Â
Up next for the Panthers is the first of three-straight home games, as they take on York College. That contest is set for January 31st at 7 p.m. and you can follow it right here.Â
