THROGGS NECK, NY - The Purchase College men's basketball team picked up right where it left in 2019, starting the new year with a road win against Maritime College, 92-79, in the team's Skyline Conference opener.
The victory also pushed Purchase's winning streak to six games, as the Panthers are now 6-4 overall. Meanwhile, the Privateers of Maritime dropped to 4-6 on the year and 0-1 in the Skyline.
Despite the end result, it was actually the hosts who jumped out to an early advantage, as Maritime outscored Purchase, 10-4, over the first three minutes of the game. However, the lead was short lived, as the Panthers responded with a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to grab the lead.
From there, Purchase led the rest of the half, going up by as many as 11 points, before settling for a 41-35 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, the Panthers continued to hold the lead, before Maritime began to slowly chip away at it. The hosts were finally able to breakthrough with 7:14 remaining, as back-to-back layups put the Privateers ahead, 64-63.
The Panthers weren't fazed by the change though, as they jumped back in front 30 seconds later via a
Jorden Means (FR/New York, NY) layup. Over the final six minutes of the game, Maritime managed to keep pace with the Panthers for awhile, before the dam finally broke and Purchase buried Maritime late to earn the win.
