PURCHASE, NY – The Purchase College women's basketball team dropped a 91-56 road contest to SUNY Old Westbury Saturday afternoon inside the Clark Athletic Center.
Old Westbury (8-12, 8-7 SKY) opened up the scoring early, turning three Purchase (3-16, 2-12 SKY) turnovers into six points. The host Panthers would score 11 unanswered points before Purchase lit up its side of the board with a layup from junior guard
Dejeana Peoples (New York, NY) at the five-minute mark. Old Westbury stayed hot though and drove in another lopsided run (17-3) to take a comfortable 28-5 lead after the first quarter.
The hosts would stretch their advantage to as many as 27 points (39-12) in the second quarter, before Purchase slowly started to claw back. Sophomore guard
Shadai Plowden (Yonkers, NY) ignited a 10-0 PC run after connecting on a shot from inside the paint off an offensive rebound and assist by freshman forward
Jazzmyne Hernandez (Bronx, NY). Purchase outscored Old Westbury 24-19 to come within 18 points (47-29) at the break.
Despite the offensive surge from Purchase in the second quarter, Old Westbury held the lead for the remainder of the game en route to the 91-56 victory.
Plowden registered her second-straight 20-point game and led all scorers with an impressive 27 points. The standout sophomore also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds to go along with two steals and one assist. Peoples posted 17 points, four boards and a pair of assists, while Hernandez added eight points, three rebounds and one block off the bench.
The Panthers shot 33.3 percent (18-of-54) from the field and went 54.3 percent (19-of-35) from the charity stipe. Purchase allowed Old Westbury to score 23 points off its 14 turnovers as well as 27 second-chance points. OW shot 46.1 percent (35-of-76) from the field, including 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from beyond the arc.
Four Old Westbury players scored in double digits, led by La'Niya Clark with 22 points. Davida Warren finished with a double-double performance of 20 points and 14 rebounds, while Micah Brown and Melinda Harris finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Ja'nya Flash led the defensive effort with a game-high 16 boards and two blocks.
Purchase returns to Long Island on Wednesday to face the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles. The Skyline tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
