PURCHASE, NY - The Purchase College men's volleyball team lost to John Jay College Thursday night, as the Bloodhounds topped the Panthers in four sets.
Set scores for the match were 25-21, 25-20, 22-25 and 25-15. With the result, Purchase is now 1-6 on the year, while John Jay earned its first win and is now 1-7.Â
Outside of the third set, the Bloodhounds of John Jay dominated all game when it came to hitting. The guests finished with hitting percentages of .409, .333 and .480 in the first, second and fourth frames, respectively, and finished with at least 12 kills in all three sets.Â
As for Purchase, it managed 28 kills total on the night and finished with a team-high .115 percentage in the second set.
In the first frame, the two sides battled to a draw early, as the score was tied at 12-12. From there, the guests collected four-straight points to jump in front and used the advantage to hold off Purchase late to secure the early set win.
That trend continued in the second stanza, as the two squads again traded punches to an early tie score, 10-10. But once more, the Bloodhounds were able to break the deadlock with a rally, this time recording five-straight points. The Panthers did manage to cut the deficit to just one point, down 17-16, but that was as close as they got the rest of the set.
Once the match moved to the third frame, the two squads continued to play a tight game early.
After the guests rallied to tie the contest at 15-15, Purchase finally flipped a set in its favor by scoring five-straight points to take its biggest lead of the night. From there, the hosts maintained their five-point edge until late, as John Jay knocked in three-straight points to cut the deficit to 24-22.Â
However, the Panthers held off the Bloodhounds in the end, as the pair of
Christian Colon (JR/Bronx, NY)Â and
Chris Posillico (SO/Bay Shore, NY) finished the set with a block to secure the 25-22 victory.Â
Despite carrying momentum into the final set, the Panthers were unable to channel it into any early separation between themselves and guests. The two remained tight on the scoreboard until it was the guests that finally took over in the frame.
With John Jay down, 10-9, the guests responded by tallying nine of the next 10 points to take the lead, 18-11. From there, the Bloodhounds finished off Purchase to win the final set, 25-15 and the match, 3-1.
Individually, the Panthers were led in the effort by
Jeremiah Huntt (SO/Bronx, NY), as he finished with a season and game-high 15 kills. Huntt also added three aces and seven digs.Â
Colon chipped in five kills and two blocks, while Posillico added five kills, two blocks and a game-high 13 digs.
Andreo Otiniano (SR/Mamaroneck, NY) recorded 21 assists in the loss.Â
