PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's volleyball team earned a decisive victory Thursday night, cruising past the Maccabees of Yeshiva University in straight sets.
Set scores for the Skyline Conference matchup were 25-13, 25-8 and 25-9. With the win, the Panthers improved to 2-10 overall and 1-7 in the conference, while Yeshiva dropped to 0-5 in both categories.Â
From the get-go, the Panthers enjoyed the advantage in the contest. In the opening set, the hosts scored eight of the first 10 points and raced out to a 15-7 lead. The Maccabees then responded with a mini-rally, eventually cutting the lead to just five points at 17-12.
However, that was as close as Yeshiva got the rest of the set, as Purchase embarked on an 8-1 run to earn the win.
The Panthers enjoyed even greater success in the second frame, as they built early leads of 10-1 and 15-3. Yeshiva answered with five-straight points to cut the margin to to 15-8, before a 10-point streak lifted the hosts to the set win.Â
Purchase continued to roll in the final frame, scoring the first seven points en route to a 25-9 victory.
On the night, the Panthers hit .222 with 26 kills overall. As for the Maccabees, they totaled eight kills on -.270 hitting.Â
Individually,
Samantha Fasce (JR/Yorktown Heights, NY) led Purchase with 11 points (eight kills and three aces), whileÂ
Pamella Gonzalez (JR/Bronx, NY) added eight kills and seven digs.Â
Karina Medina (SR/Brooklyn, NY) collected a match-high 21 assists and five aces in the win.Â
Up next for the Panthers is a non-conference tri-match with Pratt Institute and Five Towns College. The event will be hosted by Pratt on October 16th, with the matches beginning at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively.Â
