PURCHASE, N.Y. – The weekend could not have ended in a better way for the Purchase women's tennis team. After dropping a non-conference match on Saturday, the Panthers bounced back with an 8-1 Senior Day triumph against Skyline foe Yeshiva University on Sunday.
With the win, Purchase capped its regular season record at 6-4 overall (4-2 Skyline) and secured the No. 2 seed in the Skyline postseason. The Panthers will host the semifinal match against No. 3 Sarah Lawrence College this Wednesday.
Prior to the start of Sunday's match, the host Panthers celebrated their three seniors with a Senior Day ceremony. With a speech from head coach
Anna Yates, seniors
Isabel Biagiotti (Highland Mills, NY),
Julie Shuett (Northport, NY) and
Madeline Makowski (Greenlawn, NY) were recognized for their individual accomplishments and dedication to the program.
Following the ceremony, both teams took to the courts for doubles play.
Purchase broke open the scoring with wins at first and third doubles.
Nikita Kordzielewska (JR/Stepnica, Poland) and Biagiotti cruised to an 8-1 victory at the top spot, while
Elaina Coppola (SO/White Plains, NY) and
Olivia Menchell (FR/Weston, CT) were awarded a win by walkover at third doubles.
Yeshiva (0-6, 0-6 Skyline), having only four players travel due to illness, was forced to forfeit the fifth and sixth singles matches.
With a comfortable 4-1 edge over the Maccabees, Purchase secured the match decision with a Biagiotti ace at third singles. The veteran Panther downed Yeshiva's Naomi Feinberg, 6-1, 6-0.
Kordzielewska, Menchell and Coppola completed the sweep of singles with wins at the first, second and fourth positions, respectively.
