Turnovers Loom Large in Men's Basketball Home Opener

Panthers fall to Ramapo, 67-56

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Purchase College senior guard Malcolm Hansford-Whyte led all scorers in double figures with 18 points; however, visiting Ramapo College would score 16 points off 10 Purchase turnovers in the second half to walk away with the non-conference win, 67-56, on Wednesday night.

The home-opening loss dopped PC to 0-8 overall, while the visiting Roadrunners advanced to 2-7 on the season.

After Ramapo drained the game's first basket on a made layup, Purchase scored four unanswered points to pull ahead. The Panthers would later stretch their lead to five (11-6) on a James Brady (SR/Yonkers, NY) fastbreak in the paint.

Ramapo would slowly chip away in the possessions to follow, and with just over six minutes remaining in the half, the Roadrunners would leapfrog Purchase to a 21-18.

The final minutes of the stanza saw four more ties and another six lead changes. A jumper in the paint from Jordan Myers with seconds remaining capped the scoring and put Ramapo within one point of the home team (31-30) at the break.

Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm at the start of the second half. It wasn't until midway through that Ramapo found just enough success to pull away from Purchase. Following a Panther layup that tied the game at 41 apiece, the Roadrunners ignited with a 9-1 run and would hold the lead for the remainder of regulation en route to the 67-56 victory.

For Purchase, Brady fell just shy of a double-double performance after collecting 11 points and nine rebounds. Eric Block (SR/Warwick, NY) chipped in with nine points, while Matthew Phillips (FR/Bronx, NY) grabbed an impressive 11 boards, eight points, three blocks and two steals.

Myers and Peter Gorman led the visitors with 17 points apiece, while Marquise Kindel netted a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.

Purchase will return to its home court this Saturday as the Panthers get set to host the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for a Skyline Conference matchup slated for noon.
