PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team earned a doubleheader split Monday afternoon, as game one went to Farmingdale State College, 4-3, before the Panthers bounced back in game two, 8-3.
With the results, Purchase is now 5-7 overall and 2-7 in Skyline Conference games. Meanwhile, Farmingdale now stands at 6-2 and 6-0.Â
The Rams started the day hot, as the guests knocked in four runs in the top of the first against Purchase's starter,
Ryan Kozersky (SR/Mount Kisco, NY). Initially, it looked like it might be a rough outing for Kozersky and the Panthers, as he allowed four hits and a walk to five of the first six batters.
However, from there, the senior right-hander locked-in and only allowed two more hits over the next 5.2 innings he threw. Unfortunately for Kozersky, the Panther bats couldn't bail him out late and he was ultimately tagged with the loss.
Speaking of the Purchase bats, the hosts got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third, following an RBI-single from
Dylan Flynn (SR/Smithtown, NY) and a Farmingdale error later in the frame.
The score remained 4-2 until the sixth inning, when
Myles Scarry (FR/Levittown, NY) used a sacrifice bunt to scoreÂ
Jemal Betances (JR/Bronx, NY) following back-to-back singles from Betances and
Matthew Mulligan (JR/Yaphunk, NY).
One inning later, Purchase looked primed to snatch the lead away as it loaded the bases with no outs. However, that's when Farmingdale's head coach called on his ace reliever, Joe Marino (SR/Islip Terrace, NY).
Marino then took to the mound and induced two fly balls and a pop up to secure the slim advantage for the Rams, as they exploded with momentum and the Panthers were left deflated.Â
From there, Marino and the Rams collected a double-play to end the eighth inning, before stopping Purchase in the ninth, after Flynn made it to second base.Â
For the effort, Marino enjoyed the rare three-inning save, as he allowed just two hits, while Tyler Loft (FR/Nesconset, NY) earned the win for Farmingdale.
For the Panthers, Flynn finished with three hits and a stolen base.
The game one loss clearly lit a spark in the Purchase dugout in-between games though, as the home bats came alive early in game two.
After Farmindale started with a run in the first inning, the Panthers responded with two of their own in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a
Louis Carvell (SO/New York, NY) RBI-single and a Farmingdale error with the bases loaded.Â
One inning later,
James May (JR/Floral Park, NY) drilled an RBI-double down the left field line to make it 3-1. Two batters later, Carvell again found the right pitch and nailed a two-run single through the left side to open up the game, 5-1.Â
The guests responded by scoring two runs over the third and fourth frames to make it 5-3, before the combination of
Alex Miller (JR/Reno, NV) and
Jackson Lowery (SO/Woodbridge, VA) shutdown the Rams the rest of the way.
Miller earned the win after he allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings of work, while Lowery tossed two shutout-innings to close the game and collect the save.Â
With the two pitchers dealing, extra runs weren't necessary for the Panthers to record the win. However, that didn't stop the the hosts from adding them on regardless.
In the bottom of the sixth, Mulligan and Carvell hit back-to-back RBI-singles to push the margin to 8-3, where it eventually concluded.
Carvell finished with three RBI-singles in the win, tallying five RBIs total. May and
James Shea (JR/Brooklyn, NY) each collected two hits apiece for the blue and orange, while Flynn recorded another hit to move his hitting-streak to seven-straight games.
Up next for the Panthers is another home doubleheader later this week, as they are set to host United States Merchant Marine Academy on Friday, April 2nd. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. and you can follow the contests here.Â
