Johnson Nets Hat Trick

Panthers Drop First Road Game to MSMC

NEWBURGH, NY – The Purchase College men's lacrosse team suffered a 16-4 Skyline setback at Mount Saint Mary College Tuesday evening.

The loss dropped the Panthers to 0-2 on the young season, while the host Knights earned their first win and advanced to 1-2 overall.

Senior attacker Brendan Johnson (White Plains, NY) paced the Purchase offense with three goals— marking his first hat trick this season—to go along with a pair of caused turnovers. Senior midfielder Ben Erkan (Bellport, NY) added one goal, one assist and a team-best six ground balls, while freshman defender Jagger Warren (Mastic Beach, NY) chipped in with one assist.
Senior netminder Eamon McGee (White Plains, NY) suffered the loss despite shutting down nine Knight attempts. McGee stands at 0-2 overall.

MSMC was led by sophomore midfielder Mike Travers, who netted three goals on four shots. The Knights posted scores from ten other players, including two goals apiece from Anthony Kearns, Ryan Olmstead and Xavier Rodriguez.

Mount's starting goalie Devin Kelly (1-2) was tagged with the win after collecting nine saves, while giving up just two goals.

The Mount jumped out to an early 7-1 lead after the opening quarter. Erkan scored the lone goal for Purchase with just under seven minutes remaining in the period. The goal marked Erkan's first of the season.

Purchase was the first to tally in the second quarter as Erkan connected with Johnson, who found the back of the net at 13:20. MSMC responded with six unanswered goals to take a 13-2 halftime lead.

The Knight defense held Purchase to a scoreless third quarter, while combining for two goals over the 15-minute stanza.

The Panthers connected on two shots in the final quarter but it was not enough to claw back from a 14-goal deficit.

Up next, Purchase will travel to St. Joseph's College (LI) to take on the Golden Eagles this Friday. The Skyline matchup is slated for 2 p.m.
