Women's Lacrosse Downed by St. Joseph's College-Long Island

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's lacrosse team suffered a Skyline Conference loss Friday night, falling to the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's College-Long Island by the score of 17-4.

With the loss, the Panthers dropped to 0-4 overall and in Skyline games, while the Golden Eagles improved to 3-2 in both.

From the get-go, the guests came out on fire, scoring the first seven goals of the night.

Purchase managed to get two goals back midway through the first half, as Maddy Mecca (SR/Oceanside, NY) and Gabby Castles (Bethpage, NY) each scored over a 90-second span to cut it to 7-2.

That was as close as Purchase got the rest of the way though, as the Golden Eagles responded by tallying seven-more goals en route to a 14-3 halftime lead. The Panthers' lone goal during that stretch came on an unassisted effort by Madison Fetzer (SO/Happauge, NY).

In the second half, Castles scored the opening on goal on a solo effort 100-seconds into the frame, before the Panthers were shutout the rest of the way.

Castles finished the night with three points (2g, 1a), two ground balls and caused a turnover. In goal, Casandra Schmoger (SO/Islip, NY) collected with 12 saves.

Michelle Gomez (SO/Oceanside, NY) tallied two ground balls and a caused turnover, while Fetzer recorded one goal and two draw controls for Purchase.

Up next for the women's lacrosse team is a road matchup with the United States Merchant Marine Academy on April 20th. That contest is set to get started at 6:30 p.m. and you can follow it here.
