Softball Celebrates Senior Day Against SUNY Old Westbury

PURCHASE, N.Y.-  The Purchase College softball team celebrated its Senior Day Tuesday afternoon, by wrapping up the year with a pair of losses to The College at Old Westbury.

The Panthers honored their graduating duo of Kelly Agostini (Centereach, N.Y.) and Haley Maerz (Goshen, N.Y.) in between games one and two, with an on-field ceremony.

The pair of seniors had their career honors detailed and took photos alongside coaches and teammates, who presented them with gifts. Sadly, unlike years prior, family and friends were unable to attend due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, the moment was recorded and you can click here to view it.

As for the action on the field, the Panthers of Purchase College were defeated by the Panthers of Old Westbury by the scores of 14-0 and 6-1.

In game one, the guests jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning, before erupting for 10 runs in the third frame to cruise to the win.

For Purchase, Agostini and Alexandria Perez (JR/Bronx, N.Y.) each tallied a hit, while Brianna Palermo (SO/Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Julia Marsala (FR/Shoreham, N.Y.) both reached base with a walk.

After the opening-game win, Old Westbury picked up right where it left off by scoring two runs in the first inning, one in the second, and two more in the third.

The host Panthers managed a run this time around though, as they crossed home plate in the fourth frame. Zanaia Godette (SO/Queens, N.Y.) led off the inning with a triple down the left field line, before Marsala brought her home a couple of batters later with a single.

From there, the guests limited Purchase to just one hit the rest of the way, before adding one more run in the seventh to secure the 6-1 victory.

Godette and Marsala led the effort with a pair of hits apiece, while Agostini, Maerz and Karina Medina (JR/Brooklyn, N.Y.) each recorded a single.

With the results, Purchase finished the 2021 campaign with records of 1-26 overall and 1-20 in Skyline Conference action.  Meanwhile, Old Westbury concluded its season with marks of 5-13 and 4-12, respectively.

The Purchase College softball team is set to return to the field in March of 2022.
