BRONX, N.Y. – One second half goal was enough for the host Lehman College in Wednesday evening's non-conference women's soccer game.
The Panthers broke open 2021 action with the contest, returning to the pitch for the first time since 2019.
Prevailing in a physical, defensive contest, Lehman (1-1) delivered the eventual game-winning goal in the 51st minute. Following three-consecutive shots on goal from Purchase (0-1) and a quick turnover to Lehman's final third, Lightning senior Melanie Siranaula netted her first of the season. The goal, assisted by Micaela Canapa, was shot from the left wing to the far post.
The lone goal was enough for Lehman, as the hosts held on for the 1-0 shutout.
The opening half featured consistent defensive play on both sides, including a notable six stops in goal for Panther netminder
Haley Cascio (SO/Deer Park, NY). The stanza ended in a scoreless stalemate with Lehman holding an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Lehman goalkeeper Rebecca Gritz recorded her first shutout win of 2021 after recording eight saves for the home team. Cascio finished with seven saves for Purchase.
The Panthers, under first-year head coach
Graham Fortunato, return to action Saturday for the team's home and Skyline Conference opener against St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn). Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
