Panthers Defeated by St. Joseph's-Brooklyn at Home

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's basketball team was defeated by the Bears of St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn Tuesday night, falling in the Skyline Conference matchup by the score of 80-55.

With the result, the Panthers now sit at 1-13 overall and 1-10 in conference action. Meanwhile, the Bears moved to 4-12 and 4-9, respectively.

The action started quickly for the guests, as they raced out to an 11-3 lead just five minutes in. Over the remainder of the first quarter, the Bears pushed their lead to as many as 10 points, before settling for a 17-9 lead after one.

Despite the early deficit, the Panthers weren't phased. In fact, Purchase responded with arguably their best sequence of the season to start the second, embarking on a 12-0 scoring run over the opening 3:45 of the frame. With the run, the Panthers flipped the script and gained their first lead of contest, 19-17.

However, their advantage and streak came to a sudden conclusion, as St. Joseph's-Brooklyn answered right back with a 15-0 run to regain the lead at 32-19 late in the half.

Purchase continued to fight over the remaining minutes of the second quarter to get back within eight points, 34-26; but that was as close as the Panthers got the rest of the night.

Following the halftime break, the Bears proceeded to outscore the hosts, 27-12, in the third and push their lead to as many as 28 points, before earning the eventual win, 80-55.

On the night, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn bested Purchase with its size, outpacing the Panthers in rebounds, 50-39, and points in the paint, 40-22.

Individually, Ariella Johnson (SO/Brooklyn, NY) enjoyed a solid night for the hosts, finishing with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Kasia Morrison (SO/Bronx, NY) added 11 points, while Miya Ritchie (SR/Harlem, NY) chipped in six points and eight rebounds.

Up next for the Panthers is another home Skyline Conference battle, as they host the Maccabees of Yeshiva University on January 27th. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off and you can follow it right here.
