PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's basketball team was defeated by the Bears of St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn Tuesday night, falling in the Skyline Conference matchup by the score of 80-55.
With the result, the Panthers now sit at 1-13 overall and 1-10 in conference action. Meanwhile, the Bears moved to 4-12 and 4-9, respectively.
The action started quickly for the guests, as they raced out to an 11-3 lead just five minutes in. Over the remainder of the first quarter, the Bears pushed their lead to as many as 10 points, before settling for a 17-9 lead after one.
Despite the early deficit, the Panthers weren't phased. In fact, Purchase responded with arguably their best sequence of the season to start the second, embarking on a 12-0 scoring run over the opening 3:45 of the frame. With the run, the Panthers flipped the script and gained their first lead of contest, 19-17.Â
However, their advantage and streak came to a sudden conclusion, as St. Joseph's-Brooklyn answered right back with a 15-0 run to regain the lead at 32-19 late in the half.
Purchase continued to fight over the remaining minutes of the second quarter to get back within eight points, 34-26; but that was as close as the Panthers got the rest of the night.
Following the halftime break, the Bears proceeded to outscore the hosts, 27-12, in the third and push their lead to as many as 28 points, before earning the eventual win, 80-55.
On the night, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn bested Purchase with its size, outpacing the Panthers in rebounds, 50-39, and points in the paint, 40-22.Â
Individually,
Ariella Johnson (SO/Brooklyn, NY) enjoyed a solid night for the hosts, finishing with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Kasia Morrison (SO/Bronx, NY) added 11 points, while
Miya Ritchie (SR/Harlem, NY)Â chipped in six points and eight rebounds.Â
