PURCHASE, N.Y. — Although the race for a fourth Skyline win would go to visiting St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) in a hard-fought 5-4 battle, Purchase College showed its mettle, while also taking a moment to give seniors Nikita Kordzielewska and Sophia Cenatiempo a proper sendoff in the final home match of the regular season.
Wednesday afternoon was not only a great day for a marquee duel matchup between two elite teams, but it was also one more chance for the Panthers to acknowledge Kordzielewska (Stepnica, Poland) and Cenatiempo (Woodbury, CT) for their contributions both on and off the courts.
Purchase (6-5, 3-2 Skyline) followed the Senior Day festivities with a commanding 2-1 doubles advantage to open the match.
St. Joe's answered back with wins at sixth and second singles, respectively, to pull ahead 4-2.
Panther freshman Sierra Blanco (New York, NY) fired back for Purchase with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at the No. 4 spot.
First singles was next to finish as Kordzielewska battled to a 7-5, 6-3 victory to tie the match at 4-apiece.
Despite a valiant effort from the Panthers, the back-and-forth scoring landed in favor of the visitors, 5-4.
Purchase will conclude its regular season slate with a road match at Mount Saint Mary College on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m.
