BRONX, N.Y. - Three goals during the final 19 minutes sank the Purchase College men's soccer team Saturday afternoon, as the Panthers fell to Mount Saint Vincent by the score of 4-1.
With the Skyline Conference loss, the Blue and Orange dropped 7-9 overall and 3-7 in the league. For the Dolphins of Mount St. Vincent, they improved to 7-4-3 and 5-2-3, respectively.
The result was a tough one for the visitors, as Purchase was either tied with or lead the hosts for the first 71 minutes of action Saturday.
In fact, the Panthers were the first team to find the back of the net on the day, asÂ
Colman Cassidy (SR/Brooklyn, NY) slipped a shot past the Dolphins' keeper in the 6th minute.Â
Purchase maintained the lead until the 39th, when the hosts managed to tie things with a strike of their own. That 1-1 scoreline then carried into the midway break and well into the second half.
It wasn't until the game entered the homestretch that Mount St. Vincent erupted, notching a trio of goals in the 72nd, 80th and 86th minutes to seal the win.
Overall, the hosts outpaced Purchase in offense to the tune of 28 shots to seven, and 13-3 on goal.Â
Offensively, Cassidy led the attack with two shots, while
Marlon Matute (SO/Staten Island, NY) and
Leo Conte (JR/New York, NY) each tallied a shot on goal.Â
Ethan Dillon (SR/Poughkeepsie, NY) collected an assist on the Cassidy strike. In goal,
Mario Olmedo (JR/East Elmhurst, NY) recorded eight saves in the defeat.
Saturday's loss officially eliminated the Panthers from postseason contention, so the squad will now conclude the year at U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on October 25th.
That game is set to begin at 7 p.m. and you can follow it here.Â
