Women's Tennis Drops Season-Ending Semifinal Match at SJU-LI

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Women's tennis concluded its 2022 campaign with a 5-2 semifinal loss to the second-seeded St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) Thursday evening.

The No. 3 Panthers finish the season with an overall record of 7-6 (4-2 SKY), while the Golden Eagles advance to the Skyline Conference Championship at 8-3 overall (5-1 SKY). St. Joe's will battle top-seeded Farmingdale State for the league title this Saturday at noon.

The senior duo of Nikita Kordzielewska (Stepnica, Poland) and Sophia Cenatiempo broke the scoring ice on Thursday after recording the first win of the evening—an 8-3 decision over Avecillas Martinez and Lorraine Podlesny at No. 1 doubles.

The Golden Eagles, however, edged out 8-5 and 8-6 wins at the second and third positions to lead 2-1 at the start of singles play.

St. Joe's stretched its advantage to 4-2 with wins at sixth and second singles but Kordzielewska's 6-2, 7-6 triumph at the top flight snapped the run as Purchase inched closer, 4-3.

At second singles, Cenatiempo pushed SJU's Madison DiPalo to the brink in a 0-6, 7-6, 1-6 battle but fell short as the hosts secured the deciding point to win the match.
