Panthers Conclude 2022 with Loss to SJU-Brooklyn

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's volleyball team was bested by St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn Thursday night, falling in straight sets to closeout the 2022 season.

Set scores for the matchup were 25-14, 25-20 and 25-17.

Long-scoring runs were the name of the game for the Bears Thursday, as the guests secured a large advantage in all three sets because of them.

In set one, St. Joseph's used an 11-2 run to turn a 7-5 lead into an 18-7 margin en route to the opening frame win.

Set two saw the Panthers jump in front early, 9-7, before the Bears outscored the hosts 17-6 over the next 23 points to make it 23-15.

Purchase held tough, cutting it to 23-19, before the guests eventually took the frame, 25-20.

In the final frame, the two sides kept things close initially, tying four times over the opening points, before a 6-1 run by St. Joseph's turned a 10-10 game into a 16-11 advantage.

From there, Purchase cut the margin to just three points, 16-13, but that was as close as the hosts got the rest of the way.

In the end, the Panthers finished with 17 kills on -.011 hitting, while the Bears (6-12 overall, 5-6 Skyline) totaled 28 kills on .093 hitting.

Individually, Samantha Fasce (SR/Yorktown Heights, NY) led the team with six kills, six digs and two aces.

Lauren White (JR/Washington, D.C.) added five kills, Maria Kuprikova (SR/New Rochelle, NY) chipped in four kills and Karina Medina (SR/Brooklyn, NY) collected 15 assists and 15 digs in the effort.

With the loss, the Panthers finished the year 3-18 overall and 2-9 in the Skyline Conference.

The women's volleyball team will now have the rest of the year off, before returning to action next fall.
