Second Half Surge Fuels Victory Over CMSV

Panthers down the visiting Dolphins, 94-88

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Purchase College men's basketball team used a second half offensive surge to fuel a 94-88 Skyline Conference victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent Tuesday evening.

Four different Panthers reached double digits, led by Justin Mason (FR/Staten Island, NY) with 21 points. Elijah Holmes (SO/Brooklyn, NY) produced 20 points and five rebounds, while Malcolm Handford-Whyte (SR/Queens, NY) finished with 19 points and a game-best nine boards. Terrence Mason (JR/Greenburgh, NY) capped the double-digit scoring effort with 18 points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Dan Porcic led the charge for the visiting Dolphins with a notable game-high 38 points. The junior guard connected on 12-of-21 from the field, including 5-of-11 from beyond the arc and a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. Dorian Robinson finished with 17 points, while Kelvin Turner-Harris and Elijah McKenzie netted 12 and 10 points, respectively.

A back-and-forth opening half saw CMSV (7-12, 5-6 Skyline) use a 6-0 run to gain a 15-point lead (35-20) over the host Panthers (4-13, 4-5 Skyline). The Dolphins held the advantage throughout the opening 20 minutes. At the break, the visitor led 48-37.

Holmes connected on a jumper to open the second half. The Panthers continued to chip away over the next several minutes until an 8-0 run earned PC its first lead of the stanza, 57-56. Justin Mason produced five points and Eric Block (SR/Warwick, NY) netted a triple to fuel the rally.

CMSV would take back the lead, 58-57, on a McKenzie layup, but the Panthers fired back with a 22-7 run over the next six minutes of play to take a 79-65 advantage.

Purchase stretched its lead to as many as 15 points before the Dolphins rattled off 11 unanswered points to narrow the hosts' advantage to four points (82-78). Porcic went 3-for-3 from the free throw line to make it a one possession game with 1:28 remaining in regulation.

The Panthers, however, outshot the visitors 7-2 the rest of the way to secure the Skyline victory.

Purchase shot 61.5% (16-of-26) in the second half, including 21 points at the charity stripe, 12 in the paint and 11 off fast breaks.

The Panthers are back in action at home this Thursday for an 8 p.m. tipoff against Skyline foe St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn). The league contest was rescheduled from Jan. 29.
