Men's Basketball Concludes Season at Skyline Quarterfinals

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Purchase College 2021-22 men's basketball season came to a close Tuesday at nationally ranked Yeshiva University.

The host Maccabees—ranked No. 20 in the nation and No. 3 in the Skyline Conference—tagged the sixth-seeded Panthers with a 101-66 Skyline quarterfinal loss.

History was made inside the packed Max Stern Center as Yeshiva graduate student Gabriel Leifer became the program's all-time leading rebounder, surpassing YU Hall of Famer David Kufeld ('80) who grabbed 1,222 career rebounds. Thanks to his seven-rebound night, Leifer now has 1,225 boards in his illustrious career.

Purchase won the tip-off to open the game but it was Yeshiva that lit up the board first following a layup from Ofek Reef.  Jordan Knochen (SR/Maybrook, NY) answered back with a triple to break the scoring ice for the Panthers.

Both teams traded baskets over the next several minutes before Malcolm Hansford-Whyte (SR/Queens, NY) delivered a jumper inside the paint at 13:24 to give Purchase a 16-12 advantage.

Yeshiva would later erase the deficit and take back the lead on an Ethan Lasko free throw. The Maccabee offense continued to ignite as the hosts pulled ahead to close the half with a 13-point lead (46-33).

YU carried the momentum into the second stanza, gradually increasing its edge over the Panthers until the final buzzer.

Senior Ryan Turell led all players with 29 points, connecting on 11-of-16 from the field. Leifer finished with 21 points, five assists and five blocks. Eitan Halpert chipped in with 13 points, while Reef added 12 points to the offensive effort.

For Purchase, Hansford-Whyte netted a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds. Terrence Mason (JR/Greenburgh, NY) knocked down 5-of-10 from the field to finish with 12 points. Justin Mason (FR/Staten Island, NY) capped the double digit scoring for PC with 10 points, while Matthew Phillips (FR/Bronx, NY) tied the game-high in blocks (5).

Purchase concludes its 2021-22 campaign at 6-18 overall and 6-10 in the Skyline.

Thanks to No. 7 Mount Saint Vincent's upset victory over No. 2 U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Yeshiva will host the Dolphins in a Skyline Semifinal matchup on Thursday at 8 p.m.
