BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's tennis team took to the courts for the first time in 730 days Thursday afternoon, ultimately falling to Brooklyn College by the score of 5-4.
Men's tennis is the final Purchase program to return to play following the Covid-19 pandemic, and as a result, a lot of new faces represented the Panthers on the day.
To begin, Purchase dropped the #2 and #3 doubles matchups, before the #1 pair of
Ben Joory (JR/Port Washington, NY) and
Julian Szuper (SR/New York, NY) took their contest, 8-6.
Afterwards, the six singles contests were evenly split between the two squads, though the Panthers dominated the top-flight battles.
Szuper outlasted his foe in the #1 spot after rallying from a first-set loss. The score was 4-6, 6-2 and 10-4.
Joory cruised in the second-singles spot, 6-2 and 6-4, while
Simon Montalvo (SR/Valencia, Spain) held off a challenge in the third battle, 6-4, 6-7 (7-5) and 10-5.
As for the rest of the Panthers, Thursday's matchup marked the first game played in the careers of
David Goldstein (FR/Leonia, NJ),
Frederick Kaden (FR/Farmingdale, NY) and
William Isidro (JR/Monroe, NY).
Up next for Purchase is the team's home opener against John Jay College. That contest is scheduled for March 15th at 3:30 p.m.
