PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team secured its fifth-straight win Monday afternoon, outlasting the Eagles of Saint Elizabeth University, 10-6.
With the non-conference win, the Panthers are now 5-7 overall. St. Elizabeth dropped to 3-9 with the loss.
Purchase got off to a quick start on the day, knocking in two runs in the first inning, with the first coming from
Christian Homa (SO/Fairfield, CT) on a RBI-groundout.
During the next at-bat,
Louis Carvell (JR/New York, NY) drove home a run with a single to right center to make it 2-0.
In the top of the second, the Eagles managed to get a run back thanks to an inning-opening triple followed by a balk during the next batter.
However, it was the bottom of the second that produced the biggest fireworks display of the day, as the Panthers dropped six runs in the frame.
After a pair of singles opened the stanza, the first run crossed the plate following a St. Elizabeth error.
Later in the inning, a wild pitch allowed
Connor O'Rourke (SR/Massapequa, NY) to score, making it 4-1. From there,
James May (SR/Floral Park, NY) hit an RBI-groundout, before Homa nailed an RBI-double to left center.
After another error by the guests allowed the seventh run in,
Mason Compton (FR.CArmel, NY)Â closed out the frame with an RBI-double to push the lead to 8-1.
The guests got one run back in the third, before the Panthers scored two more runs in the fifth via another RBI-double from Compton and an Eagles' balk.
From there, the two sides remained scoreless over the next three innings, until the top of the ninth. In the set, St. Elizabeth managed four runs, including a two-run homer, to make it a contest.
But ultimately, the Panthers had more than enough juice to hold out for the 10-6 victory.
Compton and
Drew Stabinsky (SO/Floral Park, NY) each tallied two hits, with the former driving in two runs. Homa also finished with two RBIs, while Carvell tallied a hit, an RBI, a walk and two runs in the win.
On the mound, Purchase starter
Myles Scarry (SO/Levittown, NY) emerged victorious after going five innings, striking out four and allowing just two runs.Â
Up next for the Panthers is a few days off before returning to Skyline Conference action against Mount Saint Vincent. That home doubleheader is scheduled for March 26th and is set to begin at 11 a.m.Â
