Women's Lax Cruises Past Mitchell for First Win

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the 2022 season Wednesday afternoon, cruising past the Mariners of Mitchell College, 12-7.

With the victory, the Panthers are now 1-2 overall, while Mitchell dropped to 1-4.

Despite the season-high 12 goals for the hosts, their offense started the contest slowly and was shutout in the opening quarter. The guests scored once to lead after 15 minutes.

However, Purchase responded with a vengeance in the second period, pouring in eight goals in the frame, including five-straight midway through.

More than half of the goals in the period, five specifically, came from Madison Buttice (JR/Bethpage, NY), while Shauna Meehan (JR/Suffern, NY), Analie Ingalsbe (FR/West Hurley, NY) and Giavanna Cordero (SO/Selden, NY) each tallied a strike.

At the halftime break, the Panthers led 8-3.

Once the second half began, the scoring picked right back up for the hosts, as Brienne Westfall (JR/Grand Island, NY) and Lauren Pudelka (JR/Danbury, CT) added strikes to push the margin to its biggest of the game.

Back-to-back third quarter goals from Mitchell cut the deficit to 10-5, before Buttice added her sixth of the day.

In the fourth, the guests scored twice to get within four goals, before Katie Borger (SR/Bellmore, NY) sealed the game with her first goal of the season.

Draw control domination was a major factor in the Panthers' win, as they outpaced Mitchell 17-6 in the category.

Buttice was the catalyst behind that success, as she finished with a game-high 10 draw controls. She also recorded game-high totals in goals (6), points (7), grounds balls (5) and caused turnovers (3).

In goal, Casandra Schmoger (JR/Islip, NY) collected eight saves.

Up next for the Panthers is their first road game of the season, as the team travels to Cedar Crest College on March 25th at 5 p.m.
