Purchase Sweeps Yeshiva, 3-0

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Purchase College men's volleyball team used a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-19, 25-19) to take down Yeshiva University Tuesday night inside the Max Stern Center.

With the win, the Panthers picked up their second Skyline Conference victory in three days and moved to 5-14 overall (4-7 SKY). The host Maccabees dropped to 4-10 (3-8 SKY) in defeat.
Senior hitting ace Joe Higgins (Bayside, NY) led the Panthers with 13 kills, while committing five errors for a .348 hitting percentage.  He also added four digs and tied fellow senior co-captain Jeremiah Huntt (Bronx, NY) at four service aces. Huntt produced 12 kills (.056) and five digs, while freshman Marcus Garguilo (Port Washington, NY) hit .222 off 18 attempts and finished with a match-leading four blocks (3 solo).

Junior setter Idris Idris (Bronx, NY) tossed up 25 assists and senior middle Dan McDonough (East Hampton, NY) led all scorers at the serving line with five aces.

Purchase used three Maccabee errors and a kill from Higgins to open up a 6-3 advantage early in the first set. Yeshiva pushed back to gain a 14-13 edge, but the hosts could not outlast the Panther attack as Purchase later erupted with a 9-1 run to take a commanding 22-15 lead.

Purchase closed the first set, 25-22, on a Huntt kill off the feed from Idris.

A competitive second set saw nine tie scores and a slew of lead changes. Purchase capitalized on four Maccabee errors and a McDonough service ace to move up 20-16. The Panthers coasted the rest of the way to the 25-19 set win.

The third set would see even more competitive play than the previous stanza. Down 17-16, Purchase rattled off a 4-0 run, but Yeshiva answered with a rally of its own. The back-and-forth scoring landed in a tie, 19-19, with Yeshiva's Amitai Kolom at the service line.

Off the feed from Idris, Huntt smashed a kill and ignited a 6-0 run that earned Purchase the 25-19 set win and match decision. A pair of McDonough aces closed out the set.

Next up, the Panthers travel to St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) for a Skyline match this Thursday at 7 p.m.
