Softball takes 10-2 loss in game one at MSMC; Game two postponed due to rain

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Purchase College softball team suffered a 10-2 Skyline Conference loss at Mount Saint Mary College on Thursday. Game two of the annual twin bill was postponed due to weather.

With the win, Mount Saint Mary advanced to 11-11 overall and 8-1 in the league. Purchase dropped to 8-11 on the season and 4-3 in conference play.

Leading 2-0 after the first inning, the host Knights stretched the advantage to 6-0 on a 4-RBI homerun from Laura Denato in the bottom of the second.

Purchase lit up the board in the top of the third with a pair of runs. With only one out remaining, Jaiya Hewitt (SR/Kingston, NY) got on with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch with Rebecca Bronzi (FR/Lagrangeville, NY) at the plate. Bronzi singled to left field for the RBI. Alexandria Perez (SR/Brinx, NY) followed with a single through the left side, pushing Bronzi to second base. Both runners advanced on back-to-back wild pitches for the second tally of the inning. The run forced a MSMC pitching change as Christen Hansen came into the circle in relief. She walked Purchase freshman Olivia Audia (Dover Plains, NY) got out of the jam as the next Panther batter popped up to the short stop to retire the frame.

Mount Saint Mary fired back with a run in the bottom half of the inning after Sofia Gannon laced a double to center field.

The hosts connected again in the fourth and fifth innings with a combined three runs en route to the 10-2 victory.

Hansen (7-2) earned the win for the home team after tossing 2.1 innings of two-hit scoreless softball. Purchase's Kelly Agostini (SR/Centereach, NY) (6-7) was tagged with the loss.
