Purchase Swept at Albertus Magnus

DANBURY, CT - The Purchase College baseball team lost a pair of contests Monday afternoon, falling to Albertus Magnus College by the scores fo 12-9 and 8-4.

With the results, the Panthers are now 10-16 overall, while the Falcons jumped to 7-18.

Game 1 - Albertus Magnus 12, Purchase 9 (7 inn.)

The opening game of the doubleheader was a tough result for the Panthers, as the guests raced out to an 8-2 lead over the first four innings, only to see the hosts rally back late to steal the win.

Purchase started the contest with an RBI-single from Christian Homa (SO/Farifield, CT) and a sacrifice fly from James May (SR/Floral Park, NY) to jump ahead in the first inning.

Two innings later, Mason Compton (FR/Carmel, NY) extended the margin to 3-0 with an RBI-double, before a wild pitch and a Falcons' error extended the lead to 5-0.

In the bottom of the third, Albertus Magnus secured its first run with an RBI-double, but still faced an uphill challenge.

That challenge was made even harder when Purchase scored three more runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 8-1. The runs came from a two-run double from Compton and a RBI-single from Homa.

Albertus Magnus recorded another RBI-double in the bottom of the fourth the cut the deficit to 8-2, before suddenly exploding for five runs in the fifth to make game an actual contest.

While the Panthers' lead was trimmed significantly following the run, a third RBI-single from Homa pushed the margin back to two runs in the top of the sixth, 9-7.

However, the rally gods were on the side of the hosts on the night, as the Falcons secured three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to jump in front for the first time all game, 10-9.

The hosts then forced the Panthers into a 1-2-3 seventh inning to secure the come-from-behind victory.

Offensively, Homa, James Shea (SR/Brooklyn, NY) and Max Vera (SR/Bethpage, NY) each finished with three hits in the effort.

On the mound, Drew Stabinsky (SO/Floral Park, NY) collected the loss after allowing the winning run.

Game 2 - Albertus Magnus 8, Purchase 4 (7 inn.)

Following the win, the Falcons started game two just as they ended game one - with an offensive flurry - jumping ahead 2-0 in the first.

Purchase wasn't fazed though, and tied the contest two innings later after Compton scored on a wild pitch and May smacked a solo homer to left field.

However, the tie score was short lived as the hosts jumped back in front with a two-run double in the bottom of the third.

Trevor Zanderzuk (SO/Manorville, NY) then cut that deficit in half with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth, but that was as close as Purchase got the rest of the way.

During the ensuing frame, Albertus Magnus doubled its run count to push the margin to 8-3, before Zanderzuk hit an RBI-ground out to get the score to its final result.

Offensively, Compton led the effort with a team-high three hits including a double.

On the mound, Justin Doskoez (SO/Eastport, NY) received the loss. He went 4.2 innings, stuck out five and allowed eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits.

Up next for the Panthers is a return to Skyline Conference action, as the team hosts Manhattanville College on April 23rd. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.

Before the game begins, Purchase baseball is going to celebrate and honor its 2020 Senior Class, as that group of players never had a Senior Day following the cancellation of the season due to Covid-19.
