PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team earned a split in the Battle of the Panthers Saturday afternoon, as Purchase fell to SUNY Old Westbury in game one, before topping the Long Island squad in game two.
Scores for the contests were 11-0 and 3-2.
With the split result, the Blue and Orange Panthers improved to 7-11 overall and 4-4 in Skyline Conference games. Meanwhile, the Green and White Panthers now sit at 5-14 and 3-5, respectively.
Game 1 - Old Westbury 11, Purchase 0 (7 inn.)
From the get-go, the opening game was a snoozer, as the guests belted a three-run homer in the first inning. Old Westbury then added two runs apiece in the second, third, fourth and seventh innings to tally the 11-run margin.
As for the Panthers' offense, their bats were held in check with just two singles. On the mound,
Myles Scarry (SO/Levittown, NY) received the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) over the first three innings.Â
Game 2 - Purchase 3, Old Westbury 2
While the opening game was a blowout, the final contest of the afternoon was anything but that.
After being shutout in the opener, the hosting Panthers changed that narrative quickly in game two with an RBI-single from
Mason Compton (FR/Carmel, NY) in the bottom of the first.Â
One inning later, the visiting Panthers tied the contest on an RBI-triple to make it 1-1, where the score stood for quite a while.Â
It wasn't until the fifth that the next run crossed the plate, as
James May (SR/Floral Park, NY) scored after
Matt Dragotto (FR/Middle Island, NY) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.Â
Three innings later, Purchase added a crucial insurance run off an RBI-single from
Louis Carvell (JR/New York, NY).
The run made it 3-1 and turned out to be the game-winning score, as the visitors gave the hosts quite the scare in the ninth.Â
After a strikeout started the frame, Old Westbury hit three-straight singles with the last one knocking in a run to make it 3-2.
From there, Purchase intentionally walked a batter to load the bases with one out.
During the ensuing at-bat,
Jackson Lowery (JR/Woodbridge, VA) induced a 4-6-3 double play to finish off the win for the hosting Panthers.Â
The Blue and Orange belted a season-high 14 hits in the victory, with six players recording multi-hit games, including Carvell with a game-high three hits.Â
However, the real star was the Panthers' starting pitcher,
Ryan Castrataro (JR/Mahopac, NY).
Castrataro threw 113 pitches in the win, allowing just the two runs on five hits in his 8.1 innings of action. From there, Lowery came in and secured the save.Â
Up next for the Panthers is more doubleheader action, though it will be of the non-conference variety. Purchase is set to take on CCNY tomorrow (4/3) at 11 a.m. at home. You can follow it here.
