BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Purchase College softball team dropped both ends of a Skyline Conference doubleheader to St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Saturday at the LIU Softball Complex.
Costly errors from the Panther defense allowed the host Bears to steal a 23-2 victory in game one before taking a 6-2 win in the finale.
Game One: St. Joe's 23, Purchase 2
In the opener, St. Joe's (17-7, 5-5 Skyline) put Purchase (10-14, 6-6 Skyline) in an early hole, scoring four runs (1 ER) in the bottom of the second inning.
In the following inning, the Bears turned a pair of Purchase errors into seven runs. Vivian Tomovich led off with a hit by pitch and Sofia Logreco followed with ball four, resulting in a call to the Panther bullpen as
Emily Foltin (SO/Somers, NY) came in to relieve starting pitcher
Tara Sasso (JR/North Rockland, NY).
SJC scored its fifth run on a sacrifice fly to center field and used a Arianna Heinsch triple to right center to bring home another trio of base runners. The Bears stretched it to 11-0 with back-to-back singles.
Heinsch homered in the fourth to highlight another big inning for the hosts. The result—a commanding 23-0 advantage.
Purchase finally snapped the shutout attempt with two runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Erin Mullen (JR/Woodlawn, NY)led off with a walk and advanced to third on a double to right field from Olivia McMellan (FR/Corning, NY). With runners in scoring position,
Jade D'Errico (SO/Wantagh, NY) smacked a single to left center and
Brianna Palermo (JR/Hyde Park, NY) singled up the middle to score Mullen and McMellan, respectively.
In the circle for the Panthers, Sasso went two innings, giving up three hits, three walks and six runs (2 ER). Foltin also tossed two, giving up 17 runs (4 ER) on 12 hits and one walk.
Game Two: St. Joe's 6, Purchase 2
With one runner on in the top of the fourth,
Alexandria Perez (SR/Bronx, NY) broke open the scoring with a bomb over the left field fence.
SJC answered back with a run in the bottom half of the inning and went on to take the lead, 4-2, in the fifth with three runs on four hits.
Purchase's offense was unable to claw back as the Panthers were eventually tagged with a 6-2 upset.
Tossing a complete game for Purchase,
Kelly Agostini (SR/Centereach, NY) gave up six runs on 13 hits, while striking out one and walking none over six innings of work. She moved to 8-8 with the loss.
Jessica Mecham (4-3) earned the win for St. Joe's in game two. She gave up two runs on eight hits, while fanning six and walking one.
