KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's tennis team concluded its 2022 season Tuesday afternoon at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, dropping the opening round Skyline Conference playoff game by the score of 5-0.
With the result, the Panthers closed out the year with a 4-10 overall record.
Meanwhile, the Mariners improved to 7-6 with the win and will move onto the semifinals at Manhattanville College later this week.
It was a tough matchup for Purchase on the day, as USMMA came out swinging.
After the hosts cruised to wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, the No. 1 duo of
Julian Szuper (SR/New York, NY) and
Simon Montalvo (SR/Valencia, Spain) pushed their opposition to the very last point, before ultimately falling, 8-7 (7-5).
With a commanding 3-0 lead heading into singles action, the Mariners just needed two wins to seal the match.
Following a pair of 6-0, 6-0 USMMA victories at the No. 4 and No. 5 slots, the match came to an end.
While the Panthers didn't record an official tally in the win columm, Szuper was well on his way in the No. 1 spot after taking the opening set, 6-1.
The men's tennis team will return to action next season in March 2023.Â
