PURCHASE, NY – Purchase College women's tennis opened its 2022 campaign against Hunter College Wednesday afternoon at home. Despite a valiant effort, the Panthers dropped the non-conference match, 7-2, to the visiting Hawks.
Hunter (1-0) opened up the scoring with a win at third doubles, but Purchase (0-1) evened the score after
Olivia Menchell (SO/Los Angeles, CA) and
Elaina Coppola (JR/White Plains, NY) recorded an 8-5 triumph at the second spot.
The Hawks picked up the No. 1 doubles win to lead 2-1 heading into singles play.
The visitors pushed their advantage to 4-1 after posting 6-2, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1 wins at second and fourth singles, respectively. Hunter later secured its fifth point and match-decision at the No. 6 spot.
Nikita Kordzielewska (SR/Stepnica, Poland) pulled ahead 7-5, 5-3 at the top flight to give Purchase its second and final win of the afternoon.
"It was a tough match but the team learned a lot," said head coach
Anna Yates. "They will take that to our next match."
The Panthers return to action this Sunday (Sept. 11) at Yeshiva University. The Skyline opener is slated for 11 a.m.
