Women's Soccer Tagged with Shutout Loss

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Coming off the heels of a relentless attacking onslaught from Manhattanville College, the Purchase women's soccer team endured a tough night on Tuesday in a 7-0 Skyline Conference loss.

In defeat, the Panthers dropped to 4-6-4 overall and 2-4 in the Skyline while the host Valiants advanced to 5-4-2 and 2-2-2 in the league.

During the first half, the Panthers' defense was severely tested as the Valiants managed to fire off 30 shots, with ten of them finding their target. Kelly Barrera, who had a standout performance for Manhattanville, began her first-career hat trick in the 24th minute, capitalizing on an opportunity created by Skyla Marrone. Just four minutes later, Barrera added another goal, this time following a shot-on-goal from Stephanie Sanchez that caught the Purchase defense off guard. The quick succession of goals put the Panthers at an early 2-0 deficit.

A few minutes later, the Valiant offense struck again, with Kailey Roxo netting her first collegiate goal, assisted by Barrera.

By halftime, Manhattanville had extended its lead to 4-0.

Barrera secured the hat trick performance after collecting the rebounded shot taken by Mia Castaneda. Purchase netminder Carolyn Hough (SO/Massapequa, NY) made the initial save which resulted in a loose ball and scoring opportunity for Barrera.

Evelyn Zumba continued to add to the Panthers' woes, pegging the contest at 7-0 shortly after, benefiting from a save by the rookie goalkeeper, Rowe Davenport (FR/New York, NY).

Macey Girard successfully kept Purchase at bay with three saves across 87:30. Nicole Camacho closed the game in goal, making her debut in a night filled with numerous firsts for the Valiants.

For Purchase, Hough totaled 16 saves with five goals against over 82:34. Davenport picked up one save and gave up two goals to close the game.

The Valiants also maintained an advantage in corner kicks, leading eight to three, which only added to Purchase's challenges.
